PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team defeated Hartwick College in an Empire 8 conference matchup at Growney Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win puts the Cardinals all alone in first place in the league standings with a 2-0 E8 record and 7-2 overall. The Hawks move to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in conference.
Fisher never trailed in this one with two goals in the first half by juniors
Jess Snyder and
Alyssa Andres. After Hartwick got on the scoreboard in the third quarter, junior
Bre Socker scored an insurance goal in what ended up being the final tally. Senior
Kelly Bergamo earned her seventh win in net this season with making two saves.
The first quarter was a defensive battle. The Cardinals were able to generate some offense on a pair of corners but could not find the back of the cage. Just over a minute into the second quarter, senior
Lindsay Scott set up Snyder on a two on one chance and the Liverpool native slid it past the keeper for her first goal of the season to make it 1-0 Fisher.
The Cardinals used the momentum of the first goal to pile on more shots for the rest of the second, tallying 11 in total for the 15-minute quarter. With under five minutes remaining in the half, Socker's shot was denied by the Hawk's goalie, however, Andres was there to pick up the loose chance and deposit it into the net to give Fisher a two-goal lead.
Halfway through the third, the Hawks scored to make it 2-1 with the home team still on top. Hartwick earned a pair of corners late in the period but the Fisher defense stymied any opportunity of tying the game up.
Just over five minutes into the fourth and final quarter, Socker corralled a bouncing ball and broke free from the Hawks defenders to put herself all alone with the Hartwick net minder. The forward shot to the far-right side off the net and snuck it inside the post for her 10
th score of the year, giving the Cardinals a 3-1 edge.
Fisher was able to hold it down the rest of the way. The Hawks had a late chance on a breakaway but Bergamo came out of the net to deny the opportunity and keep it a two-goal game which would end up being the final score.
Socker had a game-high nine shots while Scott led the way with seven shots on goal. The Cardinals' 19 shots on goal was their highest mark in a single game this season.
Fisher has a pair of road non-conference games coming up next week. First, the Cardinals travel to Cortland on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tilt. Then, at 5 p.m. on Friday, Fisher heads to Oneonta. The Cardinals return home on Monday, October 14
