CORTLAND, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team lost in double overtime to the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons by a score of 2-1 Tuesday night. The Cardinals, who are receiving votes in this week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll, move to 7-3 on the season while the Red Dragons improve to 9-3 overall.
Senior
Reghan Amoroso scored the lone tally for Fisher as it put on a season-high 20 shots on goal in the game, however, it was stymied by Cortland's red-hot goaltender. This is the second-year in a row the Cardinals have fallen to the Red Dragons in overtime.
The Fisher offense got right to work with 13 shots in the first half. At the halfway point of the second quarter, the Cardinals were awarded a penalty corner that junior
Jess Snyder took. Snyder would end up finding Amoroso with a short pass in front and the Rochester native buried it to make it 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
The Cardinals had all the momentum with piling on shots for the rest of the second period. But time and time again they were denied including a defensive save by Cortland in the final moments before halftime.
The field was still tilted in Fisher's favor to start the third quarter as they put up some early shot attempts. The Red Dragons started to generate some offense but senior
Kelly Bergamo was there to make back-to-back saves before the end of the period.
Cortland tied it less than five minutes into the fourth quarter. The Cardinals' defense was able to come up big down the stretch with denying some scoring chances to send the game into extra time.
In the first 10-minute overtime period, junior
Bre Socker had a few big shots on net but they were stopped by the Cortland net minder. Socker had two more shots early in the second overtime period but was denied by the Red Dragons defense. With just over five minutes left in the frame, Cortland slid the ball underneath Bergamo and past a couple of diving Fisher defenders to score and end the game.
Socker had a game-high 12 shots with nine on net. Snyder now has seven points (1G, 5 A) which is a new career-high in a single season for the Liverpool native.
Fisher now prepares for another Red Dragons squad, this time at Oneonta at 5 p.m. on Friday.
