Women's Volleyball Downs Medaille For Second Time This Season

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior Molly Taylor had a season-high 24 assists as the St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team defeated Medaille College in a straight-sets sweep (26-24, 25-20, 25-15). It was Fisher's 10th straight victory and the sixth straight match it won without dropping a set. The Cardinals improve to 13-5 overall while the Mavericks fall to 2-16 on the year.

The opening set had neither team win more than three straight points for much of the set. Medaille was on the doorstep to take the first set at 24-21 but the Cardinals stormed back to tie it, and then Taylor set up freshman Lindsey DeBonis for a kill to put the visitors in front, 25-24. Fisher won the set on the following point.

The Cardinals found their groove much earlier in the middle stanza. A 5-0 run gave them a 13-11 advantage. A six-point streak made it 24-18 in Fisher's favor and Taylor set up senior Olivia Levulis for the set-winning kill.

With all the momentum on their side, the third and final frame was smooth sailing for the Cardinals. A five-point run earned them a 12-5 cushion. Taylor made it match point with a service ace and Fisher finished it off on the next point to give the Cardinals their second 3-0 win against the Mavericks this season.

Sophomore Alea Steigerwald led all players with 10 kills and 18 digs. Fisher ended up with 7.5 total blocks, its third highest total this year. Freshman Caroline Leva led the way at the net with two solo blocks and three block assists.

Fisher now prepares for a pair of matches at Union College on Saturday. It will face the host Dutchwomen at 2 p.m. and then Mount Saint Mary at 4 p.m.
