Women's Soccer Secures Postseason Berth with Win at Sage

ALBANY, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team only needed one goal to clinch postseason contention on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals downed The Sage Colleges at ACP Stadium, 1-0. With the win, The Cardinals improved to 6-6-3 overall and 3-0-3 in the Empire 8 while the Gators dropped to 7-9 on the season and 2-4 in the conference.

Both teams came out strong as the Cardinals went toe-to-toe with the Gators and matched shots from the get go. The momentum began to shift in Sage's direction as it took six shots in the next 20 minutes, compared to the Cardinals' two. As the teams headed into the locker room, the score remained knotted at zero. In order for the Cardinals to come out on top, they were due for an adjustment.

The Gators kept up the pressure in the second half as they shot three times in the first ten minutes of the half. That would not last long, however, as Molly Romano's squad corrected its approach. Freshman phenom Megan Letta scored her fourth goal of the season in the 56th minute after she knocked in her own rebound for the match's deciding goal.

Fisher's defense only allowed one Sage shot in the remainder of the contest as the Cardinals reigned victorious.

Cardinals' keeper Gabriella D'Ambrosio was a perfect 7-for-7 on the day as she saved every shot that she faced. With the triumph, D'Ambrosio brought her save percentage up to .696 and her record to 3-2.

Carli Kovarik and Jessica Aldred both tallied two shots on the day for the Cardinal and Gold while the rest of Fisher's nine shots were recorded by Letta, Shiane Irwin, Chandler Stephany, Kerri Orbach, and Abigail Barr.

With the win, Fisher now has 12 points in the Empire 8 standings and has secured a spot in the conference championship. This marks the first time since 2014 that the Cardinals will make an appearance in the Empire 8 tournament. The events will take place at the top seed's home field on November 8 and 9.

The Cardinals play their last regular season match at 12 p.m. next Saturday, November 2 when they travel down East Avenue to face conference-leader Nazareth. The match could decide who hosts the Empire 8 tournament.
