Football to Host No. 19 Cortland on Saturday in Critical Empire 8 Showdown

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Following a convincing win on the road last weekend at Hartwick, the St. John Fisher College football team returns to the friendly confines of Growney Stadium at 4 p.m. on Saturday as the Cardinals are set to host nationally-ranked Cortland in a critical Empire 8 showdown.  Fisher will look for its second straight win and fifth of the year while the Red Dragons, who enter the game ranked 19th in the latest D3football.com national poll, boast a 6-0 overall record and a 3-0 mark in conference play.

THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT: In case you missed it, Fisher Athletics launched its new mobile app last fall - SJFC Athletics - in the App Store and on Google Play.  The app, which gives fans, alumni, parents and more yet another opportunity to stay-up-to-date with the latest news, highlights, schedules and more, is free and features push notifications so you never miss a beat.  Speaking of apps, don't forget to download the Radio.com mobile app to listen to each and every football game - just search ESPN ROCHESTER.

SERIES HISTORY: Fisher and Cortland are a relatively "modern" rivalry as the two teams have met just 11 times dating back to their first pairing in 1988.  In that span, Cortland holds a slight edge having won six times including a 22-3 win last year.  The Red Dragons won the first four matchups, but Fisher reeled off five wins in the next six meetings.  Cortland last visited St. John Fisher in 2017 with the Cardinals holding on for a 35-28 win to spoil Cortland's title hopes.

LAST TIME OUT: Fisher was firing on all cylinders last weekend as the Cardinals scored a season-high 49 points in a 28-point rout of Hartwick on the road.  In all, Fisher racked up a season-high 572 yards of total offense and moved the chains 28 times, which was its most first downs in a game since producing 25 in the Cardinals' 2017 win against Cortland.

DYNAMIC DUO: With the return of junior transfer TySean Sizer to the lineup last weekend, the Cardinals boast arguably the top receiving corps in the conference.  Against the Hawks, freshman quarterback Hunter Walsh had his pick of wideouts to choose from.  Senior Will Blake finished the game with a career-high 13 catches for 127 yards while Sizer finished with a career-high 179 receiving yards on just four catches to go along with two touchdowns.  Sizer's biggest play came in the form of a 96-yard touchdown pass that was just one yard shy of tying the program record set by offensive coordinator Rob Kramer and Jimmy Smith (97 yards) back in 2007.  To date, Blake leads the Empire 8 and is among the Division III leaders in both receiving yards (755) and receptions (57) while Sizer's 443 receiving yards is the fifth-most in the conference.

SIZERING UP WALSH: TySean Sizer and Hunter Walsh seem to have a knack for coming up with big plays when they're needed.  Last week was no exception as Walsh delivered a perfectly thrown ball to Sizer on first-and-10 that went for a 96-yard touchdown.  It wasn't the first time they connected for a huge play as Walsh hit Sizer in stride at Ithaca for a 90-yard score.

WE CAME TO PLAY: For the second straight week, Fisher's offense had the ball for the majority of the game as the Cardinals ran 82 plays against Hartwick after stringing together a season-high 84 plays two weeks ago at Utica.  To find a stretch where the Cardinals ran at least 80 plays in back-to-back games, you'd have to go all the way back to the first two games of the 2011 season where Fisher ran 81 plays in a 12-7 win over Buffalo State (37 rush/44 pass attempts) followed by 80 plays the following weekend in a 52-3 win over the University of Rochester (53 rush/27 pass attempts). The last time Fisher had three games with at least 80 plays...2008 (83 against Springfield, 80 against Utica, 91 against Alfred).

FIRST TIME SINCE...: Last weekend's win at Hartwick had some notable accomplishments.  Head coach Paul Vosburgh's squad had a season-high four passing touchdowns in the win, which was its most since a 42-38 win against The College at Brockport in 2016.  Fisher's offense also produced two 100-yard receivers and a 100-yard rusher for the first time in three years.

PICK OF THE LITTER: Through seven games so far this season, the Cardinals LEAD THE NATION in interceptions this season with 15.  Last week, Fisher had three more picks, which marked the third game this season that the Cardinals have had at least three interceptions in a single contest.  Sophomore Jason Rodriguez leads the team and is tied for the most interceptions in all of Division III with six while Anthony Manna and Jack Fitzgerald each have three INTs.  AJ Ariosa, Evan Strassberger and Cameron Bellino have also come down with one interception apiece.  Flash forward to this weekend's matchup with Cortland and it should be interesting as the Red Dragons have only thrown two picks all season, which is among the lowest total in the country.

SCOUTING CORTLAND: The Red Dragons enter Saturday's meeting at Growney Stadium as the top team in the Empire 8 conference with a 6-0 overall mark in 2019.  Through the team's first six games, Cortland has been efficient on the offensive side of the ball as head coach Dan MacNeill's program leads the E8 at 45.0 points per game.  Cortland has been almost automatic in the red zone this year with 30 scores on 33 trips - 25 of which have been touchdowns.

The Empire 8's top offense is paced by quarterback Brett Segala who has accounted for 14 passing touchdowns against just two picks this season.  Cortland also boasts one of the top running backs in the region with Zach Tripodi having already gained nearly 700 yards to go along with six scores.  On the outside, Segala's favorite targets this year have been Cole Burgess and Jason Carlock who have combined to catch 50 passes for 810 yards and 10 touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, Cortland ranks second overall in points allowed at under 15 per game while its five passing touchdowns allowed are the least in the Empire 8 - something Fisher hopes to change.  With 52 tackles to his credit, Gregory Alfieri is the team leader while Dylan Dubuque has come up with 41 stops on the year.  Devin Smith is the team's top pass rusher with 5.0 sacks and 6.0 tackles for a loss, but don't expect Cortland to send the house as the Red Dragons rank fifth in the conference with 12 sacks as a team.

HALL OF FAME NEWS: St. John Fisher College is set to induct eight new members into its Athletics Hall of Fame later this fall including three former football players.  All-American Tim Bailey '11 will be inducted after a record-setting career under center.  To date, he still ranks first in program history in completions (628), yards (8,352 – 1,500 more than second) and touchdowns with 77 while his 1010 attempts is second in team history.  His 62.2 completion percentage is third all-time.  On the single season list, Bailey's name appears three times in single-season attempts, yards and completions while he ranks first all-time in touchdowns for a season with 35.  James Reile '08 will also be enshrined as the former running back is fourth all-time in rushing yards with over 3,100 while his 39 touchdowns are second in Fisher's storied history.  Former All-American defensive end Terry Principe '80 will be inducted as well.  Following his time in uniform, Principe played a significant role in helping to fundraise in order to sustain the program, which was a club at that time.  Kyle Denhoff '12 (men's lacrosse), Colleen Maloney '11 (women's basketball), Sandy Spero '80 (wrestling), Luke Lennox '10 (men's soccer) and Irene Valentine '97 (softball) will also be honored.
