PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Carli Kovarik buried a pair of goals as the St. John Fisher College women's soccer team downed Fredonia, 2-0, in its last non-conference match of the season at Growney Stadium. With the victory, the Cardinals moved to 5-6-2 while the Blue Devils dropped to 4-8-2.
The teams battled out an even-scored first 45 minutes, but the Cardinals were awarded three quick corner kicks, which translated into offensive activity. Fisher tallied four shots in the first half, two more than Fredonia.
The Cardinals found their firepower in the 62
nd minute when Kovarik stole a ball from a Fredonia defender and broke away from the rest of the pack 50 yards out to uncork a shot to the upper right-hand corner of the Blue Devils' net.
Fifteen minutes later, Kovarik made an almost identical play as a ball from
Megan Letta was touched by a Fredonia defender and rerouted in Fisher's favor as Kovarik broke free and placed a quick-roller past the reach of the opponent's keeper.
Head coach
Molly Romano's defense was once again outstanding as the Cardinals only allowed four shots on the evening, with only one to land on target. The speed and skill of
Molly Tice,
Mia Tirabassi,
Chandler Stephany and
Kierra Duvall kept possession with the offense for the majority of the matchup.
22 Cardinals saw time in the match, which diversified play immensely. Fisher took seven shots led by Kovarik who notched three. She was followed by Duvall,
Shiane Irwin,
Abigail Dwyer, and
Kerri Orbach who all took one apiece.
The halves were split by Cardinals' keepers
Kayla Shutts and
Gabriella D'Ambrosio. Shutts got the start and faced two shots on the night. D'Ambrosio faced two shots in the second half and made one save. The effort brought her save percentage to .562 and her record to 2-2 on the season.
Fisher is back in action at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 19 when the Cardinals host the Pioneers of Utica College in conference action for Senior Day.
