Women's Soccer Remains Untainted in Conference Play as Cardinals Secure Draw

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team scored the game-tying goal late in regulation as it secured a 110-minute 1-1 conference draw with the Houghton College Highlanders at Growney Stadium on Friday night. The draw moved the Cardinals to 4-6-2 overall and 2-0-2 in conference play and the Highlanders to 4-7-2 on the season and 0-3-1 in the Empire 8.

The Cardinals overwhelmed the Highlanders with offensive pressure in the first half as Fisher tallied 4 shots before its opponent could record one. Houghton's single shot of the half snuck into the back of the home team's net at the 15-minute mark.

Despite playing from behind, the Cardinals kept up the offensive pressure as they were awarded five corner kicks and fired eight more shots at the Highlanders' keeper, but none placed Fisher on the board.

Fisher came out of the locker room persistent to find success. 38 minutes later and nine tries later, the Cardinals found room to breathe on a free kick as Abigail Barr unleashed a rocket that flew past the Highlanders' keeper. The goal marked the senior's team-leading third of the season and kept Fisher's blood pumping.

The teams conceded to the sudden-death overtime period, but neither could capitalize. The Cardinals' best chance to score came in the first overtime when Shiane Irwin passed a give-and-go ball to Carli Kovarik who ricocheted it back to her teammate as Irwin sent a ball that was just stopped by the Houghton keeper.

Molly Romano's defense stood strong as possession remained with the Cardinal and Gold for the majority of the contest. Fisher conceded just three shots on the night, in which two landed on target. Midfielders Irwin and Logan Chase, and defenders Chandler Stephany, Mia Tirabassi, and Molly Tice controlled the pace and each played all 110 minutes for the Cardinals.

Kovarik (6), Barr (4), Chase (3), Irwin (3), Abigail Dwyer (2), Megan Letta (2), Stephany (1), Tirabassi (1), Kierra Duvall (1), and Kerri Orbach (1) shared the 24 total shots for Fisher.

In her fifth consecutive start, Cardinals' junior keeper Kayla Shutts notched all 110 minutes in goal and made one save in the match as her record moved to 2-2-2.

Fisher hosts their last non-conference match of the season at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15 when the Fredonia Blue Devils travel to Pittsford.
