Men's Basketball Overwhelms Sage To Remain Unbeaten in Conference Play

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Four players finished in double figures as the St. John Fisher College men's basketball team remained unbeaten in conference play behind a 92-66 win over visiting Sage Colleges on Friday night inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.  With the win, Fisher improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the Empire 8 while the Gators fell to 5-8, 1-3, respectively.

Sammy Robinson led all scorers with 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting to go along with five rebounds and three assists.  Ryan Henderson added 19 points and five boards in 27 minutes while Matt Asenjo contributed 12 points, five rebounds and four helpers in the win.  James Leone chipped in with 11 points on the night.

Both teams found their stride early as the game was knotted up at 10-10 with just over two minutes gone by before back-to-back baskets by Robinson and Henderson staked Fisher to a four-point edge.  As the half continued, the score remained a one-possession game until a 3-pointer on the wing by Leone sparked a 12-0 Fisher run to open up a 31-16 advantage.  The Gators would eventually cut the deficit to 11 points, but the Cardinals continued to push the pace and eventually built a 17-point cushion, 50-33, heading into the break.

Trailing by double digits to start the second half, Sage began to play with a sense of urgency and cut the deficit to 13, but that was as close as the Gators would get as the Cardinals reeled off 17 of the game's next 21 points with Robinson accounting for eight to hold a 79-50 lead.

From there, Fisher continued to push the tempo as the Cardinals finished the game shooting a season-high 57.5% from the floor en route to a season-high 92 points.

Overall, the Cardinals were 41-of-71 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.  Fisher accounted for 20 assists in the win and came away with a season-high 13 steals overall.

Fisher will return to the hardwood at 4 p.m. on Saturday when it welcomes Stevens Institute of Technology to Manning and Napier Varsity Gym for an Empire 8 tilt.
