Field Hockey Sees Winning Streak Snapped at Washington & Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team had its six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday as the Cardinals fell to Washington and Jefferson in an Empire 8 battle at Cameron Stadium.  With the loss, Fisher fell to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play while the Presidents improved to 8-0 on the season and sit atop the conference standings at 3-0.

After both teams traded possessions throughout much of the opening half, the Presidents struck first in the 26th minute after working around the Cardinals' defense to hold a 1-0 advantage.

Fisher would even the score five minutes later in the 31st minute when Bre Socker sent a pass that found Lauren Fazio who deposited it in the lower half of the cage to knot things at 1-1.

Coming out of the halftime break, both teams looked to net the go-ahead goal, however, Washington and Jefferson would score the difference maker in the 59th minute after taking the ball from 25 yards out and drawing the Cardinals' keeper out before finding the back of the net to take a one-goal lead, 2-1.

Fisher would have one final chance in the 66th frame to tie the game after drawing a penalty corner, but the Presidents were able to regain possession as time ran out on the comeback bid.
In all, Fisher had 10 shots led by Socker's four attempts while Kelly Bergamo had three shots overall.

Ashley Maynard started in goal for the Cardinals and was tagged with the loss after playing all 70 minutes and allowing two goals overall.  The senior keeper made three saves on the day.

Fisher will look to begin a new winning streak at 5 p.m. on Wednesday when the team travels across town to take on nationally-ranked Rochester.
