ROCHESTER, N.Y – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team fell to the No. 6 University of Rochester on Wednesday evening on the road by a score of 3-1. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 7-3 overall on the season, while the Yellowjackets move to 11-0 on the year.
Both sides came out defensively strong to start off the game, as the first shot of the game was recorded by Rochester at exactly the 10 minute mark.
However, the Yellowjackets also were also the first on the scoreboard, when they were able to beat goalkeeper
Ashley Maynard on a two-on-one break, to gain the 1-0 advantage just after the 13 minute mark on the game clock.
After Maynard made two consecutive saves in front of the Fisher cage, Rochester was able to add two more quick goals to its lead following consecutive penalty corners.
Following a Cardinal penalty corner at the 29.45 minute mark,
Bre Socker rifled a shot toward the cage, which was deflected into the back of the net by
Lauren Fazio for her eighth goal of the season, cutting the Yellowjacket lead to 3-1.
Both teams would be held scoreless for the remainder of the first half, as Rochester brought a 3-1 lead over the Cardinals into the halftime break, with Fazio,
Lindsay Scott, and
Gianna Palma all notching one shot a piece.
Fisher came out aggressive to start the second half, as Palma tallied another two shots, forcing the Rochester goalkeeper to make two quick saves out of halftime. Maynard remained steady, making two key saves within the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Despite 17 total shots between the two teams, both sides would be held scoreless for the entire the second half, as Rochester was able to earn the non-conference victory.
Palma led the way for Fisher with three shots in the contest, while
Kelly Bergamo added one shot in the second half. Maynard suffered the loss, moving her record to 7-3 overall, while totaling 11 saves in the game.
The Cardinals who are earning votes in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll, will travel to Utica College on Saturday at 11 a.m., to take on the Pioneers in an Empire 8 Conference matchup.
