Field Hockey Overwhelms Utica in 4-1 Win

UTICA, N.Y. – Four different players scored a goal on Saturday as the St. John Fisher College field hockey team got back to its winning ways as the Cardinals overwhelmed Utica College, 4-1, in an Empire 8 pairing at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  With the win, Fisher climbed to 3-1 in the conference standings and 8-3 overall while the Pioneers dipped to 4-7 on the season and 2-1 against Empire 8 opposition.

The host Pioneers struck first in the 17th minute, but were unable to maintain their hold as Lindsay Scott broke free and uncorked a shot into the back of the net to tie things up at one goal apiece.

The Cardinals would post what turned out to be the game-winning goal just three minutes into the second half when Reghan Amoroso netted her second goal of the season after corralling a rebound in front of the net to give Fisher a 2-1 advantage.  Gianna Palma was credited with an assist on the play.

Fisher struck again in the 56th minute when Bre Socker laced a pass to Alyssa Andres who blasted a shot from 12 yards out that snuck through Utica's defense and into the cage to make it a 3-1 affair.

The offensive output didn't end there, however, as Palma centered a pass from the left post in the 65th minute to the waiting stick of Socker who poked in her team-leading ninth goal of the year to send the Cardinals to a 4-1 decision.

In all, Fisher fired 27 shots in the win including a season-high 22 shots on goal.  Socker and Palma led the way with seven shots each while Lauren Fazio and Amoroso each accounted for four shots.  Amoroso also chipped in defensively with two saves.

In goal, senior Ashley Maynard came up big as the Rochester native earned her eighth win of the season.  Maynard totaled 70 minutes in goal and made nine saves on the day.

Fisher will step out of Empire 8 play at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when the Cardinals host Cortland in a non-conference bout at Growney Stadium.
