Field Hockey Suffers Overtime Loss To Cortland In Non-Conference Action

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team fell to SUNY Cortland by a score of 3-2 in overtime at Growney Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 8-4 overall, while the Red Dragons move to 8-5 overall on the season.

The Cardinals finished the non-conference battle with nine shots on goal, compared to the seven of Cortland, while also leading in the penalty corner battle throughout the game 16 to five.

Cortland was able to find the back of the net first in the opening half, as the Red Dragons were able to beat goalkeeper Ashley Maynard at the 8:56 mark with a shot from the right side of the cage.

The Cardinals battled back quickly, when Lauren Fazio tied the game back up at one with her eighth of the season, as the senior was able to re-direct a pass from Kelly Bergamo in front of the Cortland net past the goalkeeper.

Both teams battled for the remainder of the first 35 minute half, however both sides were held scoreless, ending the first half at a 1-1 deadlock.

Cortland was again the first team on the scoreboard in the second half, scoring off of a rebound in front of Maynard to take a 2-1 advantage at the 48:05 minute mark.

Fisher was once again able to battle back and tie the game once more, when Fazio tallied her second goal of the game, deflecting a shot from Bre Socker in front of the Cortland cage for her ninth of the season.

Much like first half, both sides were once again held scoreless for the remaining 16 minutes of regulation time, forcing the first of a possible two 10-minute overtime periods.

However, the Red Dragons were able to find the back of the net for the game-winner and their third goal of the day, at the 75:01 mark of the first overtime session.

Socker finished the game with a game-high four shots on goal, while teammates Fazio and Gianna Palma added three and two shots on goal respectively. Maynard suffered the loss, moving her record to 8-4 on the year, while finishing with three saves in the game.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday at 3 p.m., when they welcome The Sage Colleges to Growney Stadium for an Empire 8 Conference matchup.
