Field Hockey Ties Program Record in 9-0 Triumph Over Sage

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Five different players scored on Friday led by Lauren Fazio's four goals as the St. John Fisher College field hockey team tied a program record for goals in a game with a 9-0 triumph over visiting Sage Colleges at Growney Stadium in an Empire 8 bout.  With the win, Fisher, which moved to 9-4 on the season and 4-1 in the conference standings, equaled its previous mark for goals in a game, which came on September 24th, 2016 in a 9-1 win over Elmira College.

In all, Fisher totaled 28 shots led by Fazio who fired six shots in the win.  Kelly Bergamo had five shots overall and Bre Socker had four to her credit.  Talia Scarfino had a career-high four shots with three being on goal while Gianna Palma had three shots.

It didn't take long for the Cardinals to take the lead as Palma teamed up with Bergamo just 63 seconds after the opening whistle to stake the home team to a 1-0 lead.  Just over four minutes later, Palma laced a pass through the middle that found Fazio as the senior deflected the ball into the back of the cage to double Fisher's lead to 2-0.

From there, Fisher added three more goals in a span of seven minutes beginning with another goal by Fazio with Palma earning her third straight helper in the process.  Fazio struck again in the 23rd minute after corralling a rebound and uncorking a strike into the net to bring it to 4-0.  Fisher wasn't done there, however, as Socker took the ball the length of the field before beating the Gators' keeper low to make it 5-0.

Following intermission, Fisher came up with its sixth goal of the game in the 37th minute when Bergamo found Socker on the far post for her 11th goal of the season.

As the second half wore on, the Cardinals' continued to move the ball as Scarfino slapped a loose ball into the cage to open up a 7-0 cushion in the 50th minute.  Just 24 seconds later, the lead would grow to eight goals when Fazio deflected a shot by Lindsay Scott over the Sage defense and into the goal.

With time winding down, Fisher tied the program record with its ninth goal of the game in the 68th frame when Ashley Maynard, the Cardinals' keeper, found Meagan McDonald in front of the net for her first-career tally.

Maynard, who registered her first-career point in the win, played the first half and did not face a shot over 35 minutes before being relieved by Lexi Kaplan who closed out the game.  Kaplan did not face a shot in the second half.

Fisher will return to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday when it heads to Oswego State for a non-conference meeting with the Lakers.
