OSWEGO, N.Y. – Following a historic win on Friday evening that saw the St. John Fisher College field hockey team post nine goals, the Cardinals notched four more goals and took down Oswego State in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon, by a score of 4-1. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 10-4 overall, while the Lakers fall to 4-8 overall on the season.
Aside from seven penalty corners and three shots on goal, Fisher's offense wasn't able to find much breathing room as the Cardinals were held scoreless for the first 22 minutes of the first half.
Kelly Bergamo was able to beat the Oswego goalkeeper at the 22:44 minute mark for her sixth of the season with
Lauren Fazio picking up an assist on the play to give Fisher the early 1-0 advantage.
The Cardinals, who were unable to add to their lead throughout the remainder of the first half, added another three shots on net from Bergamo,
Katelyn Slomba, and
Talia Scarfino and kept Oswego off the scoreboard for the remaining 13 minutes of the opening half.
The Fisher offense came out on the attack to start the second half, as Fazio notched her team-leading 15th of the season from
Alyssa Andres to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
However, Oswego was able to cut the Fisher lead back to one goal, as the Lakers were able to beat goalkeeper
Ashley Maynard just 38 seconds after the Fazio tally.
From there, it was only two and a half minutes later when Bergamo found the back of the net for the second time, this time from
Jess Snyder for the Cardinals' third goal of the game.
The Fisher defense continued to hold strong while
Bre Socker made it 4-1 with her 12th of the season after finding the back of the net off of a feed from Fazio across the goal crease at the 48:04 mark.
Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the second half to insure Fisher its 10th victory of the 2018 season.
Maynard was credited with her 10th win of the season, playing all 70 minutes of game time and finishing with four saves.
The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m., when they travel to The College at Brockport for another non-conference matchup.
