PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team notched a 0-0 draw with Ithaca College on Tuesday night under the lights of Growney Stadium in a non-conference matchup. With the tie, the Cardinals move to 4-1-2 overall on the year, while the Bombers move to 7-0-2 overall in 2018.
The Fisher defense stood tall during the first half, only allowing two Ithaca corners and two shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Melissa McGowan was able to stop both of the Bomber shot attempts during the first 45 minute period, to keep the game knotted up at 0-0.
The Fisher offense came out aggressive to start the second half, producing two scoring chances within the first 10 minutes after halftime from
Tara Marcello and
Carli Kovarik.
Both teams would continue to battle back-and-forth for the majority of the second half, trying to gain the upper hand. The Cardinal defense came up huge at the 86:18 mark, when
Abigail Barr came up with a game-saving save, by blocking an Ithaca header off a corner kick on the goal line. McGowan finished the second half with four saves, as the teams finished regulation time and headed into the first 10-minute overtime session.
The Cardinals and Bombers would remain tied for the duration of the first overtime period, with each side notching one shot apiece.
Much like the first overtime, Fisher and Ithaca would be tied once the final horn sounded, as both teams would finish with their second draws of the season.
In all, Ithaca would lead in the shot category 23-6, while Marcello would lead Fisher with two shots. McGowan saw all 110 minutes of action between the pipes, making six saves and moving her overall record in 2018 to 4-1-2.
The Cardinals return to the field on Saturday, when they travel to Hoboken, N.J. to take on Stevens in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at 2:30 p.m.
