SALISBURY, Md. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team notched the non-conference victory at Salisbury as the Cardinals downed the Seagulls, 2-1. Fisher advanced to 4-1-1 on the year, while Salisbury dropped to 3-5-1 overall.
Fisher dominated the first 20 minutes of play with two shots on two corner kick attempts. The defense was strong and did not allow the Seagulls to get off a single shot attempt.
The Cardinals would open up the scoring with just over 19 minutes on the clock as Carli Kovarik netted her fourth goal of the season as the freshman found the rebound off the defender at the top of the box.
Fisher rounded out the first 45 minutes of play with four total shot attempts, two of which were on net. Kovarik accounted for two shots, while Elise Olivo and Tara Marcello each tallied one apiece.
Goalkeeper Melissa McGowan saved three Salisbury shots to keep the Cardinals up a goal going into the half.
Fisher did not let up and registered a second score just over the 69th minute of play. Freshman Jessica Aldred laid off a pass to Shiane Irwin who would eventually find the back of the net for the first time this season to put the Cardinals up two goals to none.
The Seagulls would slip one past McGowan but the two goals would be enough for the Cardinals to prevail, taking the 2-1 victory.
Fisher finished the day with eight total shots with Kovarik and Olivo leading the charge with two shots.
McGowan picked up the win in net for the Cardinals as the senior notched six total saves on the afternoon.
The Cardinals look to post another big win at 7 p.m. on Tuesday as Fisher is set to host former Empire 8 Conference rival Ithaca College.
