Women's Volleyball Cruises Past Medaille

PITTSFORD, N.Y – The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team once again defeated Medaille College in straight sets on Tuesday night for the second consecutive match between the two teams, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 6-7 overall on the year, while the Mavericks fall to 2-10 in 2018.

The Fisher offense came out swinging in the first set of the match, hitting for 17 kills, only three errors, and a hitting percentage of .318. However Medaille's offense was just as productive, making for a competitive back-and-forth first set.

Both sides traded points for the majority of the set, until Fisher grabbed a late 23-21 lead, after a three-point Rebecca Hay serving run, capped off by an Emily Risch kill. Again both teams traded points back-and-forth until, finally an Izzy Smith kill off the Maverick block, gave Fisher the one set advantage.

Much like the first set, both teams came out aggressive to start the second set, eventually leading to an 8-8 tie on the scoreboard. Senior Elise Kreuz would then rattle off a six-point scoring run, pushing the Cardinals ahead 14-10.The Cardinal scoring runs would not end there, as Hay would then serve-up a five-point of her own, giving the Cardinals a commanding 19-11 lead. Fisher would continue to push ahead as kills from Bernadette Nichols and Olivia Levulis would finish off the second set for the Cardinals.

Fisher would hold the momentum on its side for the third set, using six service aces to its advantage. Smith led the way with her seven-point serving run midway through the set, which gave the Cardinals a 13-7 lead.  After both sides traded points once again, Kreuz notched her second serving run of the match, this time for five straight points giving Fisher match point and eventually the straight set win.

Alea Steigerwald again led all players with 12 kills and an impressive .417 hitting percentage on 24 swings, while Risch would add seven kills and a .462 hitting percentage of her own. Smith added six kills, as well as nine digs and three service aces.

Hay finished with a game-high 18 assists, while Molly Taylor came in and posted nine assists of her own. The libero Kreuz led the Fisher defense with a game-high 18 digs, to go along with four service aces.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, when they travel to Houghton to begin their 2018 Empire 8 Conference schedule. Fisher will first take on Hartwick at 1:30 p.m., then followed by the Highlanders at 4 p.m.
