Women's Soccer Draws Tie with Houghton in First Empire 8 Match of the Season

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team notched the tie with the Houghton College Highlanders after two overtimes, 0-0. With the tie the Cardinals moved to 3-1-1 on the year and stand at 0-0-1 in the Empire 8 Conference. The Highlanders sit at 4-0-2 on the year and 0-0-1 in the conference standings.

The Cardinals came out with aggressive play in the first half as Fisher tallied four shots and two corner kick attempts in the first 18 minutes of action.

Fisher had another chance to score at the 28 minute mark as junior Emily Murray rocketed a shot off, but the Highlander goalkeeper would eventually make the save.

After the first 45 minutes the Cardinals ripped seven total shots with five different players taking shots for Fisher.

Senior goalkeeper Melissa McGowan kept Fisher knotted at zero going into halftime with three big saves in net.

Fisher would not let up, firing another three shots in the first 11 minutes of the second half, while the stellar Cardinal defense did not let up a single shot attempt to the Highlanders.

Elise Olivo had the last scoring opportunity of regulation when she ripped a shot with just three seconds left on the clock but it would sail wide of the net, forcing the teams into overtime.

Shiane Irwin and Logan Chase were credited with the two shot attempts in the first ten minute overtime period for the Cardinals however the teams stayed squared at zero and headed to a second overtime.

In the 103rd minute Fisher had a chance to score as Olivo teed up a shot that would eventually ricochet just off the post. Jessica Aldred also registered a shot attempt in the second overtime that sailed just high of the net.

The Cardinals finished with 17 total shots on the day with Murray, Olivo and Carli Kovarik taking three shots apiece. Chase, Isabelle DeStefano and Makenzie Winslow each recorded two shots in the match.

McGowan grinded out the full 110 minutes in net for the Cardinals as the senior picked up four saves in the nightcap.

Fisher jumps back into non-conference action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as the Cardinals road trip to Salisbury, Maryland to take on Salisbury University.
