Bonetto Nets First Collegiate Goal as Men's Soccer Breaks Even With D'Youville

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team fired off a season-high 26 shots as the Cardinals drew a 1-1 tie with the Spartans of D'Youville College. With the tie Fisher moved to 0-6-1 on the season, while the Spartans now sit at 0-4-1 in 2018.

Fisher rocketed 15 total shots in the first 45 minutes of play, the most the Cardinals have tallied in a half so far this season.

Freshman Justin Bonetto was red hot as the Buffalo native accumulated seven shots in the first half, three of which were on net.

The Cardinal defense limited the Spartans to three shots on net in the 45 minutes of action with sophomore Justin Miles making all three saves.

Fisher would get on the board first as Bonetto netted his first collegiate goal in the 63rd minute after Joe Balls passed him a ball inside the goalie box and Bonetto found the back of the net.

The Spartans would respond and knot the game up at one with just seven seconds remaining in regulation to send the teams to overtime.

Fisher and D'Youville each fired off two shots in the first ten minute overtime period as Balls and Bonetto ripped the shot attempts for Fisher.

The Cardinals did not quit in the second overtime period as Fisher tallied another four total shots and registered a lone corner kick attempt. Balls, Bonetto, Michael Piccarretto and Brennan Brown were each credited with a shot in the second overtime.

Bonetto finished out the night with a team-high 12 total shots while Balls took five of his own.

Miles played all 110 minutes between the posts for the Cardinals as the sophomore recorded six saves in the match.

Fisher returns to the pitch at 3 p.m. on Saturday as the Cardinals step back into Empire 8 play against the Pioneers of Utica College.
