Women's Volleyball Splits On Final Day Of Golden Flyer Invitational

PITTSFORD, N.Y. –The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team hosted two matches inside Manning and Napier Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, as part of the Golden Flyer Invitational.

In the first match, the Cardinals fell to Baldwin Wallace University in four sets 25-23, 21-25, 13-25, 14-25. Fisher followed up with a straight set win over Medaille College in its second match 25-11, 25-16, 25-18. The Cardinals move to 5-7 overall on the season, while the Yellowjackets improve to 12-1 and the Mavericks fall to 2-8.

The Cardinals came out strong to start the day, using a four-point Julia Halsey serving run to take an early 9-7 lead over Baldwin Wallace. Fisher continued to keep the pressure on with their offense in the first set, as Alea Steigerwald put away six kills, while Izzy Smith had four of her own.

Fisher remained calm throughout and was able to hold off a late five point run by the Yellowjackets, cutting the lead to just one at 22-21. However, the Cardinals stood tall and used two Baldwin Wallace errors to their advantage and grabbed a one set to none lead.

Both sides traded points back-and-forth for the majority of the second set, until the scoreboard read 18-18. Baldwin Wallace opened up a six point run putting them at game-point and eventually was able to tie the match back up at one set apiece.

In the third and fourth sets, Baldwin Wallace showed their strength at the net, hitting .214 and .500 respectively and only hitting five errors in the two final sets combined, pushing them to a four set victory.

The freshman Steigerwald led the Cardinal offense in the match with 15 kills, as well as 13 digs and two assists. Smith added eight kills, while Halsey pitched in five kills and two blocks. Rebecca Hay notched a game-high 32 assists, while Elise Kreuz led the back line with 18 digs.

Much Like the first set of the day, the Cardinals came out swinging in the first set versus Medaille, hitting for eight kills and only two errors. Mikhala Martens gave Fisher the momentum, as the sophomore rattled off nine straight serves to give the Cardinals a commanding 18-7 lead, as well as the first set victory.

Fisher continued to hold the momentum and strung a handful of scoring runs together in the second set. Martens once again scored five straight points from the service line, while Kreuz also added a five point scoring run. Emily Risch capped off the second set with thunderous kill, from Hay giving Fisher a two sets to none lead.

Kelly Graepentrog's team was able maintained their steady play throughout the third set, using the service line to their advantage. The Cardinals posted another three service aces in the third, while Bernadette Nichols led the way with three kills.

Steigerwald again hit for a team-high 10 kills, while Risch added five. Hay and Molly Taylor split the setting duties, totaling 14 and 11 assists respectively.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, when they welcome Medialle College back to Bobby Wanzer Court for a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
