HAVERFORD, Pa. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team opened up its season at Haverford College as the team took part in the Haverford Kickoff. The Cardinals fell in their first game of the weekend to Montclair State University, 2-0. With the loss Fisher dropped to 0-1-0, while the Red Hawks advanced to 1-0-0.
Elise Olivo ripped a shot just wide of the net in the 12th minute of play, before the Red Hawks opened up the scoring in the 15th minute of the game.
The Fisher defense would stifle the Montclair State offense for the remainder of the half, limiting the Red Hawks to just two more shots before heading to the locker room at halftime.
Back and forth play would mark the second half, with freshman Carli Kovarik rocketing three shots of her own to open up her collegiate career.
The Cardinals would continue to play solid defense throughout the course of the second half, but would let up a second and final goal in the 85th minute of play to wrap up the game's scoring.
Fisher finished with four total shots, two of which were on net.
Melissa McGowan came away with two saves in the match, but would suffer the loss in goal for the Cardinals.
Fisher returns to the pitch at 4 p.m. on Sunday in the tournament's consolation game against the hosting Fords of Haverford College.
