UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's tennis team earned its first win of the 2017-18 campaign in a 9-0 sweep of Utica College. With the win, the Cardinals advanced to 1-8 overall and hit the .500 mark in the conference standings with a 1-1 record. The Pioneers dropped to 0-3 overall with the loss.
The clean sweep started out in doubles matches with Kevin Kulawiec and Dustin McCullough trouncing their opponents, 8-1. Jonathan Harper and Mike Zintel followed that up with an 8-0 shutout in second doubles, before Jarrett Pelton and John Miller finished it out in third doubles with a final score of, 8-1.
Kulawiec and Miller got things going for Fisher in the singles matches, not letting up a single set in first and second singles against their Pioneer opponents.
McCullough would continue the trend for the Cardinals completing the shutout sweep of his opponent in third singles, while Harper took the fourth singles win with scores of 6-0, 6-2.
Pelton would follow the lead of his teammates and complete the fifth singles shutout sweep, before Jordon O'Connell would take the sixth singles win to complete the conference sweep with final scores of 6-1, 6-1.
The Cardinals step back into Empire 8 play at 1 p.m. on Sunday against the Hawks of Hartwick College in the Murray Athletic Center at Elmira College.
