Men's Lacrosse Locks Up Number Two Seed In The Empire 8 Conference Tournament With Win Over Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team locked up the number two seed in next week's Empire 8 Conference Tournament, with a 21-5 win over Elmira on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in the Empire 8, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 2-10 overall and 1-6 in the conference.

As the number two seed, Fisher has earned the right to host one of the semi-final matchups and will host the number three seeded Alfred University on Wednesday at 4.pm at Growney Stadium. First year head coach Dave Dobbins and his squad earned its 11th win of the season, which is the most since the 2014 season.

Elmira was the first team on the scoreboard after the opening whistle at the 13:02 mark. However the Soaring Eagles lead would not last long, as Fisher would score the next 10 goals in the game, including six in the first quarter.

Chance Gates started off the scoring for Fisher at the 8:02, with Jake Riley picking up the assist. Gate's goal was followed by tallies from Nicholas Miller, Zach Wagner, Joe Post, and two from Andrew Rosso, giving the Cardinals a 6-1 after the first 15 minutes of action.

It didn't take Fisher long to continue its scoring run, as the visitors would score four goals within the first five minutes of the second quarter. Wagner notched his second, with Rosso and Miller each tallying their hat-trick goals.

The Soaring Eagles were able to beat goalkeeper Justin Townsend at the 10:03 and 9:28 marks to cut the Fisher lead to 10-3.

However much like the first quarter, the Cardinals rallied and were able to find the back of the net five more times before the halftime horn sounded. Danny Turck, Austin Jobson, and Gates were the goal scorers, while Miller notched his 4th and 5th goals of the afternoon, giving Fisher the 16-3 advantage heading into the halftime break.

The Cardinals added to their lead in the third quarter with goals from Jack Mulvihill, defenseman Kyle O'Dea, Gates, and Rosso. Elmira answered with a goal of their own in the third 15 minute quarter, as Fisher continued to hold the advantage.

Only three goals were scored in the final quarter, as the Soaring Eagles scored the first at the 13:26 mark. Jacob Risavi and Domenic Delvecchio scored the final goals for Fisher, capping off the 2018 regular season with four consecutive victories.

Rosso led the way with another seven point game, while Miller added five points and Wagner and Gates each finished with four.

Justin Townsend was credited with his 11th victory of the season, after finishing with two saves in 30 minutes of action. Post led the way again in the faceoff circle, going a perfect 15 of 15 and also grabbing a game-high 10 ground balls.

The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday, when they host the number three seeded Alfred in the semi-finals of the Empire 8 Conference Tournament at 4 p.m.
