PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team hit the field on senior day and split with the Highlanders of Houghton College. With the victory the Cardinals jumped to 25-10 on the year, and advanced to 13-4 in Empire 8 play.
HOUGHTON 3, FISHER 0
In a game that featured two of the better pitchers in the Empire 8 Conference, Houghton was able to strike first after belting three hits in the top of the first. The Highlanders plated the game's only three runs, two of which came on an infield error, to put the Cardinals a hole.
Fisher was unable to generate much offensively until the bottom of the seventh when Ryan Fahy worked a leadoff walk. Ryan Simmons moved him into scoring position with a single up the middle, but Houghton went on to strike out the side to snap Fisher's eight-game winning streak.
Anthony Brophy started on the mound for the Cardinals and went seven strong innings, but was tagged with the loss to move to 3-3 on the year. The sophomore pitcher allowed three runs (one earned) on just four hits and had a season-best 10 strikeouts.
FISHER 10, HOUGHTON 5
Despite the game one loss, the Cardinals would come back and muscle through game two to pick up the win. Fisher would muster up ten runs on 12 hits in the affair.
Kyle Chambers would take the mound for the Cardinals and went one, two, three in the top half of the first inning. Fahy would step up to the plate in the bottom half of the frame and drive in the first run of the game.
Both teams went scoreless through the next three innings of play before the Cardinals broke it wide open in the bottom of the fifth. Fisher would plate seven runs on four singles from Simmons, Allen Murphy, Stephen Edgett and Justin Graham.
Houghton had an inning of its own with four runs on five hits in the top of the sixth, however the Cardinals would answer with a single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to lock up the conference victory.
Chambers took his fourth win of the season on the bump and struck out nine total batters on the day.
Simmons added a triple in the victory, while Simmons, Murphy, Jack Vivinetto and Thomas Pasquale piled on two-base knocks.
The Cardinals return to the diamond at 4 p.m. on Tuesday as Fisher takes on nationally ranked Oswego State in non-conference action.
