PITTSFORD, N.Y.– The No. 24 St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team took down East Avenue rival Nazareth College on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium by a score of 11-8. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the Empire 8, while the Golden Flyers fall to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Nazareth was able to put the first goal up on the scoreboard, just under two minutes after the opening whistle while on the man-down. Fisher, however, was able to get its offensive night started with a four-goal run over the next 11 minutes.
Mackenzie LeVan got the scoring run started at the 25:22 mark, followed by another goal by the senior from
Claire Bollin six minutes later.
Mallory Eymer scored her first of the game on the man-up advantage, two minutes after the second LeVan tally. Bollin added to her one assist with a goal of her own that gave Fisher a 4-1 lead.
Both sides traded goals for the remainder of the opening 30 minutes, as the Golden Flyers cut the Cardinals' lead to two goals at the 13:41 mark. Eymer notched her second of the game, which was followed by another Nazareth goal less than two minutes later.
With 9:31 remaining in the half, Eymer completed her first half hat-trick pushing the home side ahead by three goals. To end the first 30 minutes, the Golden Flyers were able to beat Fisher goalkeeper,
Morgan Hayes, twice in a 33 second span to cut the Cardinals' advantage to just one as the halftime horn sounded.
To start the second half, it was Nazareth again finding the back of the net first, as the visitors tallied twice at the 25:16 and 18:59 marks to take back the lead, 7-6.
However, the Cardinals' offense opened up another four-goal scoring run over only a three-minute span.
Morgan Young notched her first of the game, again from Bollin, as the game was knotted up again at 7-7.
Kelsie Schindler came from behind the cage and scored her 16
th of the season, sneaking a shot over the Nazareth goalkeeper's right shoulder to grab the lead back for Fisher. Another Bollin goal, followed by
Olivia Marziale's seventh of the season gave Fisher a three-goal cushion with 13:30 remaining in the game.
The Golden Flyers climbed back to within two at the 8:34 mark, however, a goal from
Mary Grace Doyle with only 35 seconds remaining sealed the Cardinals' fifth straight victory at Growney Stadium.
Hayes was credited with the victory, improving her 2018 record to 3-0, as she finished with four saves.
Hayley Maguire finished with a game-high four ground balls, while
Logan Chase and
Sarah Miles each caused two turnovers apiece.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, when the travel to The Sage Colleges for an Empire 8 Conference matchup at 1 p.m.
