Simmons Homers as No. 22 Baseball Comes Up Short Against Otterbein

BRADENTON, Fla. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College baseball team pounded out 10 hits but came up short as the No. 22 Cardinals fell to Otterbein University, 7-5, in a nine-inning affair at IMG Academy.  With the loss, Fisher sits at 1-3 while Otterbein evened its season mark at 3-3.

After surrendering two runs on two hits and a throwing error in the bottom of the first, Fisher struck back in the top of the second.  Ryan Simmons led off the frame with a double to right field and moved to third after Ryan Fahy grounded out to the right side.  Otterbein nailed down the second out of the inning, but Ryan Brown stepped in and smacked a two-out RBI-single to right-center to plate Simmons and make it a 2-1 contest.

Fisher tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third as senior Scott Eisenmenger slapped a single up the middle that plated Thomas Pasquale who had singled earlier in the inning, but in the bottom of the inning, Otterbein came up with four hits and scored four runs to open up a 6-2 edge.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Otterbein added to its lead after plating one run on two hits before the Cardinals plated a pair in the top of the seventh to pull to within three runs, 7-4.  Ryan Brown opened up the frame with a leadoff single and proceeded to swipe second base.  With a runner in scoring position, Jack Vivinetto clubbed an RBI-single to center to make it 7-3.  As the inning continued, Allen Murphy reached on a fielder's choice and promptly stole second before Justin Graham drove him in with a bunt single.

Trailing by three in the top of the eighth, Simmons blasted his second home run in as many days to make it a two-run affair, but Otterbein allowed just one runner to reach base over the final six outs as the Cardinals fell, 7-5.

Jake Hewitt took the loss on the hill and moved to 1-1 after going 2.2 innings and allowing six runs on six hits.  Ryan Felske pitched 1.1 scoreless innings while Jack Delaney surrendered one run in a third of an inning.  Alec Teska, Tim Geissel and Jared Wren combined to throw 3.2 innings as the trio did not yield a hit.

At the dish, Pasquale, Simmons, Brown and Graham each had two hits while Eisenmenger and Vivinetto each came away with one hit on the day.

The Cardinals will look to get back on track at 9 a.m. on Monday as they take on No. 6 Concordia-Chicago as part of the RussMatt Tournament in Winter Haven, Fla.
