PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team defeated Hamilton College on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Growney Stadium in a non-conference matchup by a score of 13-4. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 6-3 overall on the season, while the Continentals fall to 1-7 overall in 2018.
Zach Wagner led the charge for Fisher offensively, scoring four goals on the day, while also adding two assists for a six-point affair.
The Cardinals came out of the gates quickly and put four goals up on the scoreboard in the first quarter.
TJ VanDeusen started the scoring off with his 7
th of the season with
Nicholas Miller picking up the assist at the 9:33 mark. Just 32 seconds later, Wagner tallied his first of the game with a rocket from the top of the arc.
Andrew Rosso joined the scoring run at the 7:36 mark with his team-leading 19
th of the 2018 campaign. Wagner was able to net his second of the first 15 minutes to give Fisher the four goal advantage.
Miller pushed the Cardinal lead to five, just past the three-minute mark in the second quarter notching his 14
th of the season. Hamilton got on the scoreboard at the 9:02 mark to cut the Fisher lead to 5-1.
Chance Gates improved his scoring streak to five games as he was able to take a beautiful pass from
Jake Riley and score his 13
th of the season.
The Continentals cut the Fisher lead back to 6-3 at the 5:53 and 2:12 marks of the second quarter. However, the Cardinal offense was once again able to respond quickly as Wagner scored his hat-trick goal with 1:29 remaining in the first half. Just before the halftime horn sounded, Miller scored his second of the game with 10 seconds remaining, only this time Wagner was on the passing end. Outshooting the Continentals. 13-6 in the first half hour, the Cardinals brought an 8-3 lead into the halftime break.
Both sides were held scoreless for the majority of the third quarter. Until Wagner once again found the back of the net as he took a Rosso feed from behind the net and finished his fourth goal of the day.
Mitch Rein tallied his second of the season after picking up a ground ball around mid-field and taking it all the way past the Hamilton goalkeeper. The Cardinals pushed their lead to 11-3 with a tick-tack-toe offensive show in front of the Hamilton Cage, eventually ending with Gates finishing his second of the game from
Austin Jobson.
Fisher was the first to score in the fourth quarter when Danny Turk scored his 12
th of the season, while Wagner picked up the assist for his season-high sixth point of the game.
Domenic Delvecchio scored his first career goal at the 12:29 mark of the final quarter off another assist from Riley. The Continentals put one more goal on the scoreboard as the Cardinals were able to get back in the win column.
Justin Townsend was credited with the victory improving his record to 6-3 on the year after totaling six saves in the win. The four goals allowed ties for the least amount allowed in a game this season for the Cardinal senior goalkeeper.
Joe Post grabbed a game-high seven ground balls and finished 10 for 19 in the face off circle.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday when the team welcomes No. 13 Stevens Institute of Technology to Growney Stadium for an Empire 8 Conference matchup scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
