Men's Lacrosse Notches Hard-Fought Victory Over Clark To Finish Spring Break Trip

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team finished up its annual spring break trip on Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought victory over Clark University by a score of 12-10. The Cardinals finish their week in Florida 1-1 and improve their overall season record to 3-1, while the Cougars fall to 3-2 overall.

Fisher fell behind quickly in the first half, as Clark was able to capitalize off turnovers and score two goals both under the three minute mark of the first quarter, both being just 19 seconds apart. However, Zach Wagner ripped a shot past the goalkeeper to bring Fisher back within one two minutes later.

The Cougars added two more goals at the 7:32 and 6:30 marks to push their lead to 4-1. Two minutes later, Wagner tallied his second of the quarter off a feed from Nicholas Miller on the man-up advantage to cut the lead to two to end the first 15 minutes.

Clark was then able to capture the first goal of the second quarter four minutes in at the 11:06 minute mark to put them ahead 5-2. However, the Cardinals did not falter and in turn rattled off five consecutive goals in the quarter completely taking over the momentum of the game.

Jake Riley started the rally with his first of the game, followed by senior Andrew Rosso just a minute later. TJ VanDeusen tied the game up at five with a magical individual effort from the right side of the cage. Freshman Jacob Risavi joined the party with a goal assisted by VanDeusen that gave the Cardinals a 6-5 advantage. The freshman wasn't done however, Risavi put a rocket to the back of the net on the man-up advantage to push the Fisher lead to 7-5.

Clark did not end the half quietly though, the Cougars put two goals past goalkeeper Justin Townsend just 14 seconds apart to ensure both teams went into the halftime break tied up at seven apiece.

The Cougars again started the third quarter with the first mark on the scoreboard three and a half minutes into the third. Townsend and the Cardinal defense however stood tall for the remainder of the quarter and shutdown the Cougers.

Rosso notched his second of the game which brought the game back to a 9-9 deadlock. Miller did not let the tie last long though, the freshman scored his second of the game 38 seconds after the Rosso tally, to give Fisher the 10-9 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter.

This time, Fisher was the first to put a goal on the scoreboard in the quarter. Miller posted his second of the game exactly two minutes into the final 15, giving the Cardinals a two goal cushion. Rosso was not done scoring however, the senior notched his hat-trick goal with just over three minutes remaining in the game. The defense again was on lockdown, and was able to only allow one late goal to insure the Cardinal victory.

Townsend was credited with his third victory of the season, as the senior finished with five saves including a crucial breakaway stop that kept his team ahead by two late in the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals return home and are back in action on Wednesday when they host SUNY Brockport at Growney Stadium at 4 p.m.
