PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team hosted SUNY Brockport on a cold and snowy winter afternoon at Growney Stadium on Wednesday. The Cardinals came victorious with a 7-4 win over the Golden Eagles. With the win, Fisher improves its record to 4-1 on the season, while Brockport falls to 2-3 overall.
The Cardinals fell victim to the first two goals of the game as Brockport was able to jump out to a quick start tallying the first goal at the 11:22 mark. Only 47 seconds later the Golden Eagles increased their lead to two, early in the first quarter.
Fisher was able to battle back however as
Nicholas Miller started the goal scoring notching his ninth of the season off of a feed from
Zach Wagner. At the 2:33 minute mark,
Chance Gates tied the game back up with a rocket from the left side of the Brockport goalkeeper for his fourth of the season, with
TJ VanDeusen picking up the assist.
The Cardinals did not wait long to take the lead as
Andrew Rosso scored his first of the game off a great individual effort for his twelfth of year. Rosso wasn't satisfied however, the senior scored again less than two-minutes later on the man-advantage, off of another assist from
Zach Wagner to give Fisher the 4-2 lead. Brockport was able to add another tally to the scoreboard to cut the Cardinal lead to 4-3 heading into the halftime break.
Again it was Fisher jumping out to the early attack in the third quarter. Rosso was able to finish an incredible individual play from behind the Golden Eagles cage for his hat-trick goal and fourteenth of the season.
Wagner was not far behind however, the senior added to his already two assists with a goal of his own that put Fisher ahead 6-3 just 70 seconds after Rosso's third, while Rosso also picked up the assist on the goal for his fourth point of the afternoon.
Mitch Rein scored his first goal of the season to open the fourth quarter, as the senior ran about three-quarters of the field untouched and was able to catch the Brockport defense off guard to give Fisher the 7-4 advantage. The Golden Eagles added a late goal, but it was too little too late as Fisher was able to hold down defensively only allowing one goal in the entire second half.
Goalkeeper
Justin Townsend was credited with the win again for the Cardinals improving his record to 4-1, while making seven saves throughout the game.
Roger Panara,
Kyle O'Dea, and Rein all finished with three caused turnovers, while Panera added eight ground balls as the Fisher defense proved its dominance throughout the 60 minutes.
Joe Post finished the game going 8-14 in the faceoff circle.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, when they travel to SUNY Oswego for another non-conference matchup scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
