PITTSFORD, N.Y. – On the day that it honored its senior class, the St. John Fisher College men's basketball team got back to its winning ways on Saturday after handing visiting Hartwick College a 93-73 loss inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court. With the win, Fisher improved to 12-9 overall and remained in contention for a spot in the upcoming Empire 8 Championship with a 7-5 mark. Hartwick fell to 7-13 overall and 4-7 in the conference standings.
Prior to the game, Fisher honored the five members of its senior class including
Tyler English,
Tyler Farrell,
Alex Sausville,
Jake Haight and
Michael D'Amico.
Coming off a hard-fought loss the night before, Fisher established the tempo early as Sausville got the game started with a 3-pointer in the corner on a fed from English that sparked a 10-0 Cardinals' run over the first three minutes of play.
Hartwick would cut the deficit to seven points after an old-fashioned three-point play and a make from downtown made it 15-8 with 15:34 showing on the clock, but the Hawks found themselves on the defensive end of the floor often over the next six minutes as Fisher scored 20 of the game's next 26 points including six apiece from
Sammy Robinson and
Ryan Henderson to open up a double-digit cushion, 35-14.
As the half continued, Hartwick chipped away and pulled to within 13 points, but two free throws from English followed by a layup from Farrell staked Fisher to a 17-point edge heading into the halftime break.
The Cardinals continued to set the tone in the second half and built a 28-point lead after a 3-pointer from Robinson ignited 10 unanswered points from Fisher to make it 66-38. From there, the Hawks would eventually come to within 18 after stringing together an 11-3 run, but that was as close as they would come as the Cardinals cruised to their seventh win in Empire 8 play.
In all, four different scorers reached double figures for the Cardinals led by Henderson's 17 points. The junior also pulled down six rebounds and was 6-for-8 from the free throw line. English finished with 16 points, five boards and three assists in the win while Robinson contributed 15 points off the bench.
James Leone had 10 points and seven rebounds and Haight notched eight points and six rebounds of his own.
St. John Fisher returns to the hardwood at 6 p.m. on Tuesday as it travels to Alfred to battle the Saxons in an Empire 8 clash.
