Baumann Posts A Career-High 23 points As Women's Basketball Knocks Off No. 13 RIT In Overtime

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In come from behind fashion, the St. John Fisher College women's basketball team took down undefeated No. 13 RIT in overtime, 68-61, on Saturday evening in the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout at Nazareth College. With the win, Fisher improves to 6-3 overall on the season, while the Tigers fall to 7-1 overall.

After falling behind 16-11 after the first quarter of play, the Cardinals battled their way through the second quarter, using 14 combined first-half points from Olivia Baumann and Sydney Masna to keep the RIT lead at just six-points heading into the halftime break.

RIT opened the third quarter on a quick 8-3 scoring run, taking an early 38-25 second half lead. However, after two quick four-point runs midway through the third period put RIT ahead 44-32, Baumann continued her stellar play bringing Fisher back to within seven with five straight points to close out the third quarter.

Fisher showed its strength in an exciting fourth quarter as a Baumann 3-pointer and a lay-up from Alex Reigle cut the Tiger lead to just one at the 8:07 mark of the final quarter. Following an RIT bucket, it was Reigle again at 7:14 mark, this time from long range as the junior cut the RIT to back to just one.

Over the next three minutes of game-time, RIT mustered together a six-point scoring run once again pushing its advantage to six midway through the fourth period.

From there, it was all Fisher to close out the final quarter of regulation and force an overtime session as the Cardinals put together a 9-0 run over a three-minute span. A 3-pointer from Masna, followed by a lay-up from Baumann gave Fisher its largest lead of the game to that point, 54-51, with 1:17 remaining on the clock.

The Tigers were able to answer the call however, sinking a 3-pointer with exactly one minute remaining to force the first overtime game for both sides this season.

Over the first four minutes of overtime, both sides traded baskets, which eventually lead to a 61-61 tie on the scoreboard with 1:55 remaining in the overtime session.

It was not until 1:28 remained on the clock, when  Reigle sank another 3-pointer propelling Fisher to a 7-0 scoring run to close out the Tigers, handing them their first loss of the 2018-19 season.

Baumann led all scorers in the non-conference matchup with a career-high 23 points, to go along with seven rebounds and a steal. Reigle added 14 points, while Masna added 12 points and five assists. Senior Erin Hulbert also contributed eight points and a game-high eight assists.

Fisher controlled the glass in the triumph and out-rebounded RIT 39-32 including 10 on the offensive end of the floor. The Cardinals also showed its strength defensively, causing 16 RIT turnovers and making 12 steals.

The Cardinals will return to action at 5:30 pm on Friday, January 4th with their first Empire 8 Conference matchup of the season as they host Houghton College inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium.
