Four Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Wins Woodcliff Hotel & Spa Tournament

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Sophomore Olivia Baumann scored a team-high 21 points as the St. John Fisher College women's basketball team remained unbeaten on the season with a 75-63 win over SUNY Poly on Saturday in the title game of the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gym.  With the win, Fisher moved to 3-0 on the season while the Wildcats fell to 1-1 overall.

After a back-and-forth first quarter that featured four lead changes, the Cardinals entered the second period holding a slim lead, 17-16.  As the second stanza got underway, however, Fisher began to assert itself on both ends of the floor and would build a double-digit lead courtesy of an 11-0 run capped by an old-fashioned 3-point play by Sydney Masna to make it 28-16 with nearly five minutes gone by.

SUNY Poly finally got on the board with 5:37 remaining in the half, but was unable to string together consecutive baskets as a 3-pointer by Baumann staked the home team to a 13-point lead late in the quarter.  The Wildcats hung around though and scored five of the half's final seven points to make it a 10-point game at the break.

Fisher wasted no time reclaiming the momentum as the third period got underway as Leah Koonmen buried a shot from distance to spark an 8-2 Fisher run that pushed the Cardinals' margin to 16 points, 45-29.  From there, SUNY Poly cut the deficit to single digits with a 9-2 run only to see Fisher respond with another run of its own as the Cardinals reeled off 11 of the quarter's final 14 points to hold a 58-41 cushion heading into the fourth frame.

The Cardinals' lead would balloon to 20 points to begin the final period as Baumann found Erin Hulbert behind the arc for a 3-pointer to stake Fisher to a 61-41 advantage.  The Wildcats would eventually cut Fisher's lead to 10, but time worked against SUNY poly as the Cardinals converted 4-of-6 attempts from the free throw line over the final 2:26 to earn the first-ever Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament title.

Baumann was 6-of-10 from the floor including 5-of-7 from distance to go along with four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.  Koonmen had 12 points seven boards and five swipes while Masna had 12 points and six rebounds overall.  Hulbert chipped in with 10 points and added six rebounds and five dimes of her own.

Overall, Fisher shot well from the field after going 22-of-50 (.431) with a season-high 11 3-pointers.  The Cardinals out-rebounded the Wildcats, 36-26, and forced their opponent in to 14 turnovers.

Fisher will look to begin the season 4-0 at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday when it heads west to face Buffalo State.
