Women's Soccer Suffers Overtime Defeat at Fredonia in Non-Conference Affair

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team played 91 scoreless minutes before surrendering the game-winning goal in overtime on Tuesday as the Cardinals fell to SUNY Fredonia, 1-0, in a non-conference battle at University Stadium.  With the loss, Fisher moved to 5-4-2 while the Blue Devils improved to 7-7-0 overall.

After a scoreless first half of play, Fisher came out of its halftime huddle and looked to set the tone early in the second period.  The Cardinals peppered the Blue Devils' back line with five shots over the first 17 minutes of play, but were unable to find the back of the net as the game remained scoreless heading into the 63rd minute.

From there, Fisher had two more scoring opportunities as Carli Kovarik broke free and uncorked a pair of shots, but neither found its mark.

With time ticking away, Fredonia nearly ended the game in regulation with a shot in the 90th minute, but Fisher keeper Melissa McGowan was positioned perfectly to make the save as both teams readied for overtime.

Following 90 scoreless minute of play, the game was decided on the first shot of the overtime period as Fredonia notched the game-winner in the 92nd minute to take the 1-0 decision.

In all, Fisher outshot its host, 13-7, and had six shots on goal.  Kovarik led all players with seven shots including four on goal while Shiane Irwin and Tara Marcello had two shots apiece.

McGowan played all 92 minutes in goal and came away with four saves.

Fisher will return to Empire 8 action at 5 p.m. on Friday when it welcomes The Sage Colleges to Growney Stadium.
