OSWEGO, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team fell to Oswego State on Friday evening to kick off its three-match weekend at the Oswego State Invitational 23-25, 17-25, 16-25. With the non-conference loss, the Cardinals fall to 14-10 overall, while the Lakers move to 14-9 overall on the season.
Coming in off of six-straight victories, Fisher started off the first set with a quick five-point run, which was led by three early
Alea Steigerwald kills and a
Rebecca Hay service ace. After an Oswego four-point run to get back to within one, both sides would then trade points back and forth for the majority of the first set.
Late in the set, an
Erica Pawlewicz kill gave the Cardinals a 20-19 advantage over the Lakers. However, the Lakers gained some momentum after another three point run, to take the first set 25-23.
Oswego was able to continue its momentum into the second set, gaining control with an early 13-6 lead. A kill followed by a block from
Emily Risch, brought Fisher back to within five, however the Lakers closed out the second set with the help of a late five-point scoring run and 12 kills throughout the second set.
Both teams battled back-and-forth to start off the third set, as six different Cardinals tallied a kill within the first 10 Fisher points. After a Cardinal timeout at 15-18, Oswego rattled off a six point run to earn game-point and eventually the third set victory.
Steigerwald finished with a game-high 12 kills, while
Izzy Smith added five kills and eight digs. Pawlewicz added another four kills, with
Bernadette Nichols pitching in four kills as well.
Hay and
Molly Taylor handled the setting duties, finishing the match with 17 and nine assists respectively, while
Elise Kreuz notched a game-high 16 digs.
The Cardinals are back in action for two more non-conference matchups on Saturday starting at 12 p.m., when they take on Oneonta followed by Union College at 2 p.m., wrapping up the Oswego State Invitational.
