Men's Basketball Tripped up at Stevens in Empire 8 Showdown

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team suffered an 89-67 setback on Saturday as the Cardinals fell at Stevens Institute of Technology in an Empire 8 battle inside Canavan Arena.  With the loss, Fisher evened its season mark at 8-8 and fell to 3-4 in the conference while the Ducks finished the day at 13-4 overall and 7-1 in Empire 8 play.

The Cardinals controlled the tempo throughout much of the first 10 minutes of play as they connected on eight of their first 11 attempts from the floor to hold a 17-13 edge.  Trailing by four points with over 12 minutes left in the first half, Stevens scored 10 of the game's next 12 points to overtake Fisher, 23-19.  From there, Fisher tied the game on a layup from Dylan Harrington, but five quick points from Stevens pushed it back to a two possession affair with 6:35 still showing on the clock.

The Cardinals climbed their way back into contention with a modest 6-0 run highlighted by two layups from Jake Haight and Tyler English to hold a one-point lead, but as had been the case throughout the opening half, Stevens strung together a scoring run, this time producing 13 of the next 17 points to head into halftime with a double-digit lead, 49-37.

As both teams regrouped for the start of the second half, the Ducks carried their momentum over and extended their cushion to 21 after stringing together seven unanswered points to make it 63-42.

Trailing late in the game, Fisher continued to battle down the stretch, but the damage had been done as Stevens would lead by as many as 25 points en route to its conference-leading seventh win of the season.

Sammy Robinson led the way for Fisher with his third double-double of the season as the sophomore forward had 13 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.  Haight added 12 points for the Cardinals while Tyler English tallied seven points in all.  The Lockport native now sits just eight points away from becoming the 23rd player in program history to score 1,000 career points.  Harrington contributed nine points and three steals overall and Dennis Hare and James Leone combined to finish with 12 points and nine boards.

Fisher will close out its three-game road trip at 6 p.m. on Tuesday as it takes on Houghton College in another Empire 8 pairing.  The two teams squared off on January 12 with the Cardinals coming out on top, 98-48.
