ONEONTA, N.Y. – Caroline Robertson scored 27 points as the St. John Fisher College women's basketball team won its 10th game of the season on Saturday after outdueling Hartwick College, 62-54, in an Empire 8 bout inside Lambros Arena. The win, which marked the seventh in the team's last eight contests, moved the Cardinals' record to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in the Empire 8 standings while the Hawks fell to 3-11 on the year and 2-3 against conference competition.
Robertson finished with a game-high 27 points on 11-of-19 shooting to go along with eight rebounds. The senior knocked down three from behind the arc and had two assists in the win.
Erin Hulbert continued to fill the box score with eight points, nine rebounds and a game-high five assists while
Sydney Masna chipped in two points, five boards and four steals.
Nicole Robinson contributed eight points, seven rebounds and had two blocks in the win.
After falling behind 14-11 after one quarter of play, the Cardinals made their move in the second period. Trailing by three to begin the stanza, Fisher reeled off seven straight points capped by a 3-pointer from Robertson to hold a four-point lead, 18-14. Both teams found a groove as quarter ticked down and exchanged points for nearly five minutes before a layup from Robertson staked the Cardinals to their largest lead of half, 26-21, with 2:46 remaining before the half. Hartwick, however, was able to close the first half with four unanswered points as the Cardinals took a 26-25 edge into intermission.
In the third quarter, Fisher's advantage would balloon to double-digits after the Cardinals used a 12-2 run including four points from both Robertson and
Gillian Flint to open up a 38-27 cushion. Hartwick continued to hang around, however, and cut the deficit to five points but the swing in momentum would carry back in Fisher's favor as the Cardinals countered with eight of the game's next nine points including two 3-pointers from
Alex Reigle to hold a 12-point margin, 46-34.
Heading into the fourth quarter with a comfortable lead, Fisher found itself in a fight late as Hartwick whittled a 10-point lead down to four with just under one minute left to play. Leading by two possessions with time running out, Fisher iced the game at the free throw stripe as Hulbert and Robinson combined to go 4-for-4 down the stretch to hand the Cardinals their fifth conference win of the season.
Fisher will continue with its three-game road trip at 5 p.m. on Saturday when it takes on Stevens Institute of Technology in a battle of two of the Empire 8's top teams.
