Baumann's Career-High Leads Women's Basketball Past Alfred

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Freshman Olivia Baumann scored a career-high 21 points to lead the St. John Fisher College women's basketball team to a 73-49 win over visiting Alfred University on Saturday in an Empire 8 pairing inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.  With the victory, Fisher moved to 8-5 on the season and improved its standing in the Empire 8 Conference to 3-1.  The Saxons concluded their day at 2-11 and 0-5, respectively.

Baumann was 8-for-19 overall from the floor and sank all five of her free throw attempts.  The forward also finished with seven rebounds and four steals.  Junior guard Erin Hulbert stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, nine assists, eight rebounds and five steals while Nicole Robinson added 11 points of her own with eight boards.  Caroline Robertson contributed 10 points and three assists in the win.

After closing out the first quarter of play with a nine point lead, Fisher began to take over in the second period.  The Cardinals turned defense into offense after forcing the Saxons into three turnovers en route to eight unanswered points to build a double-digit lead, 27-12.

Alfred continued to hang around, however, and countered with a 10-2 run that ate up over four minutes of the quarter before the Cardinals could halt the swing in momentum with a pair of freebies from Baumann.

Coming out of halftime, Fisher seemed to find its rhythm as the Cardinals began the third quarter with an 8-0 run fueled by six straight points from Baumann to put the home team ahead by 15, 39-24.

The lead remained firmly in Fisher's hands heading into the final quarter with the Cardinals outscoring the Saxons 12-6 over the first five minutes of the stanza.  Head coach Melissa Kuberka's squad continued to create havoc in the back court down the stretch and forced Alfred into three turnovers as the Saxons could only manage two points in the final five minutes of the game.

Defensively, Fisher had its finest showing of the season after forcing its guest into 30 turnovers including a season-high 17 steals.  On the offensive end of the hardwood, Fisher sank a season-high 30 field goals and was credited with 16 assists on the day.

The Cardinals will look to continue their winning ways at 8 p.m. on Tuesday when they host Nazareth College in an Empire 8 contest inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium.
