SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team suffered a tough loss to open the 2017 season as the Cardinals fell in overtime, 2-1, at nationally-ranked Skidmore College. With the loss, Fisher, which finished the 2016 season with a 19-3 record, moved to 0-1 while the Thoroughbreds, who are ranked 11th in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll, moved to 1-0.
After a scoreless first half of play, the Thoroughbreds broke through with a goal in the 45th minute as a shot from the top of the box was deflected into the back of the goal.
Skidmore would hold its one-goal advantage until the 67th minute when
Reghan Amoroso notched her second collegiate goal after redirecting a corner feed from
Lauren Fazio to knot things up with just over three minutes left in regulation.
In the overtime period, Skidmore was able to push the pace and drew a penalty corner in the 73rd minute. The Thoroughbreds took advantage of the opportunity and came away with the game-winning goal after a scramble in front of Fisher's net to earn the hard-fought 2-1 win.
As a team, the Cardinals managed six shots including three from freshman
Bre Socker. Senior All-American
Emily Markarian took two shots in the loss while Amoroso was credited with the other.
In goal,
Ashley Maynard was tagged with the loss to move to 0-1 on the season after making seven saves in nearly 73 minutes of action.
The Cardinals will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when they open the home portion of their schedule against The College at Brockport at Growney Stadium.
