HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team won in dominate fashion Tuesday evening, defeating Houghton College 18-5 on the road. With the win, Fisher improves to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Houghton drops to 1-9 and remain winless in the Empire 8 (0-4).
Fisher made no mistake in the opening half, netting the contest's first 12 goals.
Nick Papayanakos notched his third hat trick of the season, as he put in two in the first quarter and completed it with one in the second.
Drew Brown also finished the half with multiple goals, scoring two 7:20 apart in the first.
The second half was very similar to the first as the Cardinal offense continued to role. Fisher piled in six more goals and captured a key conference victory.
After the final whistle had blown, 12 different had scored, led by Papayankos' three. Coming away with multiple goals were
Andrew Rosso,
Alex Hunt,
Riley O'Brien and Brown, who each nabbed two.
Daniel Harris, Jarrett Duchesneau,
Brandon Kohutanich,
Glenn Roschetzky,
Benjamin Bedosky and
Benjamin Eggers all finished with one. It was also the first goals of the season for O'Brien, Hunt, Harris, Duschesneau, Bedosky and Eggers.
At the faceoff 'X', Fisher showed great strength in winning 16 of the 21 attempts.
Devin Trifeletti had a particularly good game, coming out victorious in 10 of his 11.
Fisher also won the 50-50 opportunites battle as well, snagging 44 groundballs, compared to just 12 by the Highlanders. Faceoff expert Trifeletti scooped up six for the Cardinals, doubling his season total and setting a career-high.
Justin Townsend got the start, and the win, in net for the Cardinals, saving four saves and only allowing one goal. He was relieved at halftime for
Kyle Halladay, who recorded two saves.
Men's lacrosse returns to action in eight days as it squares off against nationally-ranked Ithaca College in Ithaca.
