ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Less than a week after suffering a late-inning loss to the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers, the St. John Fisher College baseball team returned the favor as the Cardinals scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning in a 7-6 non-conference win at Tiger Stadium. With the win, Fisher improved to 12-6 on the season while RIT fell to 7-6.
With the score tied at 6-6 after nine innings,
Ryan Prevost led of the frame with a double down the left field line before the outfielder was allowed to advance to third courtesy of an RIT balk.
Ryan Fahy stepped into the batter's box and lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Prevost and give the Cardinals the one-run edge.
In the home half of the inning, RIT had the tying run at first with a leadoff single, but
Kyle Chambers got the next hitter to ground into a double play before retiring the side with a strikeout to seal the win.
Chambers moved to 2-2 with the win after throwing 3.0 inning of relief. Chambers scattered three hits and notched three strikeouts overall.
Jason Wasilnak started on the hill for Fisher but did not factor in the decision after going 3.0 innings and giving up five runs before being lifted for
DJ Mendenhall in the fourth. Mendenhall went 2.1 innings while
Dillan Wilkinson tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Earlier in the game, RIT took a 1-0 advantage in the first inning after coming up with three hits. The lead lasted until the top of the third inning as Fisher plated two runs with
Nate Roethel and
Scott Eisenmenger driving in one run apiece.
The Tigers countered in the home half of the third with two more runs to take a 3-2 lead before Fisher plated three runs on three hits in the fourth. After a fly ball out, Fahy singled to right and moved to second when
Victor Konstantinovsky earned his way on base after being plunked by a pitch.
Thomas Pasquale singled to left and collected an RBI in the process while
Frank Carnevale came up with a big two-run single to score both Konstantinovsky and Pasquale.
Fisher's lead didn't hold for long, though, as RIT tied things up at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of RBI base knocks.
The Tigers drove in a leadoff walk in the sixth inning to grab a one-run lead, 6-5, but Fahy tied things up in the eighth with a solo shot down the right field line before delivering what turned out to be the knockout blow in the 10th.
Fisher is scheduled to return to action at 4 p.m. on Friday when it travels to Brockport to face the Golden Eagles.
