ELMIRA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team won its fifth consecutive game on Wednesday as the Cardinals cruised to a 20-2 win over host Elmira College at Campus Field. With the win, Fisher improved to 11-4 overall and 5-3 in the Empire 8 standings while the Soaring Eagles fell to 4-10, 1-6, respectively.
Before the contest, both teams sported black warm-up t-shirts in recognition of the "Team Molly" initiative. Team Molly raises awareness for a rare form of bone cancer, called Ewing Sarcoma, that was what former Buffalo State women's lacrosse player, Molly Seifritz, was diagnosed with in 2011.
Fisher got things started just four minutes into the game as
Kelsie Schindler found the back of the net on an extra-player opportunity with
Jordan Johnson picking up an assist on the play.
Cori Holbrook would stake Fisher to a two-goal lead at 24:16 with an unassisted goal before the Cardinals found the back of the net three times over the next 53 seconds with Johnson,
Jamie Wallace and
Claire Bollin providing the offense.
As the first half continued,
Mackenzie LeVan made it a 6-0 game with an unassisted tally before Johnson,
Maria Hristodoulou and
Jenna Lippert each scored to cap a 9-0 run for Fisher.
Down by nine, Elmira got on the board with 6:08 left to play in the first half, but goals by Wallace and Johnson over the final minutes sent both teams into intermission with Fisher holding an 11-1 lead.
Coming out of the break, it took the Cardinals just 59 seconds to find the back of the net as Holbrook found Bollin for the goal to make it 12-1. Less than 90 seconds later, Bollin struck again with an unassisted goal to extend the Cardinals' advantage to 12 goals.
After nearly 10 minutes of back and forth play, Elmira notched its second goal of the game, but it was too little too late as Fisher closed out the final 15 minutes of play with seven unanswered goals including
Casey Randall's first goal of the season.
Johnson led all players with seven points including three goals and four assists to go along with two groundballs. Bollin had a game-high four goals and five draw controls while Schindler had two goals and an assist in the win. Wallace had two goals for Fisher as well.
Abbie Reed had four groundballs, two caused turnovers and a draw control and
Mallory Eymer recorded a goal along with three groundballs.
As a team, Fisher outshot the Soaring Eagles 36-10 and forced Elmira into 19 turnovers.
Morgan Hayes played all 60 minutes in between the pipes and tallied five saves on the day.
Fisher will close out its regular season at 4:30 p.m. on Friday when it travels to SUNY Geneseo for a non-conference bout.
