ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College softball team picked up two more wins on Tuesday as the No. 10 Cardinals swatted the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets in a non-conference doubleheader at Southside Field. With the wins, Fisher, which has now won its last 10 games, moved to 29-5 on the season while Rochester fell to 17-13 overall.
FISHER 7, ROCHESTER 2
After falling behind 2-0 in just the first inning, Fisher roared back in the top of the fourth with four runs on two hits and two big errors.
Danielle Ventrone led off the frame with a hard-fought walk and moved to second when
Emma Savas reached on an infield error. With runners on first and second and no outs,
Kristina Balsano legged out an infield single to load the bases. As the lineup turned over, in stepped
Julia Sortisio who slapped a two-run double to right that plated Ventrone and Savas to tie the game up at two runs apiece. As the inning continued, the Cardinals would get two more runs after a throwing error by Rochester's infield allowed two more runs to cross the plate as Fisher took a 4-2 lead.
The contest remained a two-run affair until the top of the sixth when
Sarah Kubik blasted a three-run shot to left center that scored
Ashley Prince and
Katie Mazierski who had each singled earlier in the frame.
Monica Moses took the ball to start and earned a no decision. The sophomore gave up two runs on six hits over three innings before being lifted in favor of
Lindsey Thayer. Thayer, who was named the Empire 8's Pitcher of the Week on Monday after throwing two no-hitters last week, moved to 17-4 with the win after four scoreless innings. She struck out 11 in all.
FISHER 5, ROCHESTER 0
Thayer continued to impress in the night cap as the junior picked up her second win of the day and moved to 18-4 overall. The Winthrop native threw a complete game shutout and allowed just three hits while racking up 16 strikeouts.
Fisher got things going in the third inning when Sortisio doubled home a run before Prince drove her in with a single to right to stake the visitors to a two-run advantage.
The Cardinals tacked on another run in the fourth when
Mary Claire Grosvenor launched her second home run in the last five days to make it a 3-0 contest.
In the sixth inning, Grosvenor led off with a single up the middle and moved into scoring position when Ventrone walked. Savas reached on an infield error while
Alyssa Piparo, who had pinch run for Grosvenor, scurried home to make it 4-0. Fisher's final run came on the base paths as the Cardinals executed a double steal perfectly as Ventrone turned on the jets and stole home en route to the 5-0 win.
The Cardinals are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to nearby Brockport to face off with the Golden Eagles. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
