PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College softball team combined to no-hit the visiting Elmira College Soaring Eagles in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday before taking the nightcap to complete the sweep at the Softball Complex. With the wins, No. 5 Fisher, which has now won six straight games, moved to 14-2 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8 while the Soaring Eagles fell to 1-2 on the season and 0-2 against conference competition.Â
FISHER 10, ELMIRA 2 (Six Innings)
Lindsey Thayer, who moved to 8-2 with the win, was perfect through 5.0 innings before being lifted in the sixth. Thayer struck out 11 of the 15 batters she faced.Â
Allison Uberty pitched the final inning and surrendered two unearned runs despite not giving up a hit.
Neither team was able to generate much offense through the first four innings of play until the Cardinals came to life in the bottom of the fifth with six runs on five hits.Â
Ashley Prince singled up the middle before advancing to third base as
Sarah Kubik smacked a double deep into center field.Â
Karlie Neale produced Fisher's first run as the senior catcher dropped down a squeeze bunt and picked up an RBI in the process after reaching on a fielder's choice. With runners at first and second,
Genevieve Paeglow came up with an RBI-single and stole second to put another runner in scoring position. Elmira recorded a groundout and looked poised to escape the jam, but
Emma Savas had other ideas as the junior blasted a two-run double that plated both Paeglow and Neale to make it a four-run game before
Kristina Balsano stepped in and lifted a two-run home run to put Fisher up 6-0 heading into the sixth.
The Soaring Eagles got a pair back in the top of the sixth after a pair of Fisher errors, but the Cardinals ended things in the bottom of the frame with four more runs on four hits. Fisher loaded the bases before an out was recorded and scored its seventh run as Prince lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score
Katie Mazierski who had singled to lead off the inning. Prince eventually came around to score on a passed ball to put the Cardinals up 8-2 before RBI base knocks from Savas and Balsano ended the game with Fisher up 10-2.
FISHER 8, ELMIRA 0 (Five Innings)
The Cardinals carried the momentum over into the second game as
Monica Moses moved to 6-0 in the pitching circle after allowing just one hit over 5.0 innings of play. Moses did not allow a run and tallied four strikeouts overall before Uberty pitched the fifth and final inning.
Fisher scored a run in each of the first two innings with Prince and
Julia Sortisio each driving in a run.Â
The Cardinals tacked on four more runs on the strength of five hits and an Elmira error in the bottom of the third inning. Neale led off with a double before being replaced on the bases by
Alyssa Piparo who advanced to third base after Paeglow singled. Piparo scored Fisher's third run after a throwing error by Elmira before
Danielle Ventrone drove in Paeglow with a single to left to make it 4-0 in Fisher's favor. Ventrone didn't remain at first for long, however, as Savas doubled to right center to plate Fisher's fifth run of the contest. After two outs,
Katie Mazierski tripled to score Balsano who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Kubik launched a solo shot to make it a seven-run affair before Neale singled and came around to score on an RBI-single to right by Paeglow. Up 8-0, Fisher notched two more runs when
Meghan Hurley drove in a pair with a single up the middle to seal the 10-0 win.
Fisher will continue conference play at 1 p.m. on Sunday with a doubleheader against Stevens Institute of Technology at the Softball Complex.
