PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked softball team split its doubleheader with the Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals were just edged, 2-1, in the first game of the day but came back in game two, claiming a 9-0 victory in just five innings.
With today's results, Fisher's record now sits at 15-3 on the year while Stevens moves to 15-7. Both squads are 3-1 in Empire 8 play.
STEVENS 2, FISHER 1
Both teams struggled to find their bats in the opening frames, that is until Stevens' Emily Sellitti hit a solo home run in the fourth.
Fisher tied it up in the following inning though, as
Julia Sortisio led the side off with a walk. She then advanced to second on a
Danielle Ventrone sacrifice bunt, leaving her in scoring position for
Sarah Kubik. Kubik singled into the outfield on a 2-0 count, driving home the tying run.
In the final inning, Stevens reclaimed its lead leaving Fisher down one run. Fisher made a solid attempt to tie it back up as
Ashley Prince singled with two outs. Kubik sent a shot that reached the fence in the next at bat but Prince was thrown out at the plate, ending the game.
Despite taking the loss,
Lindsey Thayer allowed only four hits, while striking out 15.
FISHER 9, STEVENS, 0 (5 innings)
Fisher would collect the first tally in this contest beginning with a
Sam Schermerhorn walk to lead off the bottom of the 2nd. She would then move to second on another Ventrone sac bunt and be joined on the bases by
Emma Savas who was walked. Both runners would advance on a wild pitch and a Sortisio sac fly to right field would score Schermerhorn. Fisher would plate another run later in the inning on a bases loaded walk.
The Cardinals would triple their score in the next inning, courtesy of a
Kristina Balsano grand slam. The Connetquot, N.Y. native blasted her team-high fourth home run of the season over the left field fence to score four and give Fisher the 6-0 lead.
The game would then end on another homer, this time a three-run shot from Kubik in the bottom of the fifth.
Thayer (9-3) picked up the win on the day, striking out four and only allowing a sole hit.
Monica Moses took over in the fourth, punching out two in 2.0 innings.
Softball will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Monday as the team will host RIT for a doubleheader.
