CLEARWATER, Fla. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team defeated DeSales University, 11-5, Thursday afternoon at Phillip Jones Stadium. The team remains undefeated on the season, posting a 2-0 record.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early start as
Benjamin Stallman controlled the opening face off and found
Zach Wagner in the offensive third. Wagner received the pass and immediately fired a shot that beat the keeper, giving Fisher the 1-0 lead just 18 seconds into the contest. Nearly five minutes later,
Nick Papayanakos doubled up the lead, netting one of his own.
DeSales had an answer though as the Bulldogs tied it up moments later, but Fisher slipped one more in before the quarter's end, courtesy of a quick-stick one timer from
Drew Brown.
The second quarter was all Fisher as the Cardinals tallied six goals to increase their lead to 9-2 going into the half. Two of those goals came in the waning moments of the half as the Cardinals had a two man advantage. Wagner earned one at the 1:34 mark with the man up, and then recorded another 24 seconds later, just one second after the Bulldogs returned to full strength.
The second half saw a lot less on the scoresheet as only DeSales was able to net one in the third and the teams exchanged two goals a piece in the fourth.
Wagner led all Cardinals on the day, cashing in four goals. Brown turned in a solid outing as well, picking up five points on two goals and three assists. Also pitching in on the scoring effort was Papayankos, who had two, and
TJ VanDeusen,
Andrew Rosso and Rein, who each notched one.
Fisher played a solid defensive game as well, led by
Matt Raap who caused two turnovers and scooped three ground balls.
Between the pipes,
Tanner Swan turned aside 10 shots through 57:22 minutes. He would be replaced by
Justin Townsend with 2:24 left in regulation, allowing the junior to make three saves of his own.
Men's lacrosse will return to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday as the team rounds out its Florida trip with a game against Clark University.
