Baseball Clips Ohio Northern With 10-Run Outing

LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College baseball team got back to its winning ways as it defeated Ohio Northern University 10-5 on Wednesday. With the win, No. 9 Fisher improved to 4-2 on the season, while ONU fell to 4-2.

It took no time for the Cardinals to get the offense going as they put up three in the top of the first. Evan Ryan led the game off with a single, followed by an Antony Mantova double down the left field line. After the next two batters struck out, Scott Eisenmenger stepped to the plate. The junior belted one over the left field fence to clear the bases, notching his second home run in as many days.

The score would remain 3-0 until the fifth inning, where Fisher was able to tack on two more. Jack Vivinetto took a base on balls to start the frame and would be moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by E. Ryan. He then took third on a balk as Nate Roethel found himself at the dish with two outs. Roethel ripped one down the left line, doubling up and scoring the run from third. Jack Trotman would get beamed in the next at bat and that allowed Eisenmenger to take to the plate again. He made no mistake, singling through the left side to score Roethel from second.

Ohio Northern finally got on the board in the sixth, as a ground rule double scored two. Fisher answered in the seventh though with a run of its own. Trotman singled with two outs and was pushed around the bases as he stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Eisenmenger would gather his fifth RBI of the outing next as he singled to bring home Trotman.

The Polar Bears refused to lie down though, cashing in two runs on a home run in the bottom of the frame narrowing the Fisher lead to just 6-5.

With the score close going into the final inning, Fisher once again turned on the bats, this time with a two out rally. With one down, Mantova singled and was immediately pushed to third as Roethel singled in the next at bat. Trotman then came to the plate where he, for the second time of the day, took a pitch to the body. With the bases filled, the next batter would strike out, putting two outs on the Cardinals. That didn't faze them though as a passed ball advanced everyone a base and scored a run. Following that, Ryan Prevost laid a pretty bunt down the third base line and then used his speed to make it an RBI single. Fisher's final two runs were brought in by Thomas Pasquale as he hit a single to right center.

Jason Wasilnak got the start on the bump for Fisher, earning his first career win. The sophomore pitched 5.1 innings, striking out five and only allowing three runs. He would be relieved by Hite, who pitched 1.0 innings and punched out one. The final 2.2 were hurled by freshman Allen Murphy. The 6'0 lefty struck out three batters and earned the save in the process.

Baseball will have a day off on Thursday and will return to action at 9:15 a.m. on Friday where the team meets up with Suffolk University.
