PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team was just edged, 12-11, by Hartwick College in an overtime contest Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Fisher moves to 5-2 on the year (0-1 Empire 8) while Hartwick improves to 3-2 (1-0 E8).
In a back-and-forth contest, perhaps the most exciting play came in the last 30 seconds of regulation. Trailing 11-10 and a man down,
Zakary Bussey caused a huge turnover deep in Fisher's defenseive zone. The senior then moved the ball up the field with haste, where it eventually found its way into
Andrew Rosso's stick. As the clock winded down to the final moments, Rosso put a deke on his defender and slid the ball pass the goalie, tying the game and setting up the extra period where the Hawks would end up winning.
The game began with a Hartwick goal early in the first that was followed by three goals from the Cardinals. The Hawks would answer back with a three-goal run of their own and hold the 4-3 lead as the teams broke for intermission.
Post halftime, Fisher came out firing as the squad notched the contest's next four goals, including three from Rosso. Hartwick retaliated again though, posting three and tying it up 7-7 going into the final period of regulation.
After
Nick Papayanakos scored to open the final 15 minutes, Hartwick recorded four-straight scores, earning it the 11-8 lead. With time dwindling, Fisher didn't falter as at the 2:24 mark Rosso nabbed his fourth goal of the day to cut into the Hawks lead. Papayanakos tightened the score even more with :43 seconds left, making it a one score game and allowing the previously mentioned Rosso goal to tie it up.
Rosso's five goals on the day tied his career-high which was set in the season opener of 2016.
Nick Papayanakos also turned in a solid performance as he scored three.
Drew Brown,
Glenn Roschetzky, and
Mitch Rein also joined the score sheet as they each nabbed one.
Tanner Swan minded the net for the first 52:08 of the game, saving three shots. He was relieved by
Justin Townsend, who turned aside one shot in the final 12:03 of the contest.
Men's lacrosse will return to action on at 5 p.m. on Tuesday as the team heads to Hamilton College for a non-conference bout with the Continentals.
