Men's Lacrosse Wins Third Straight; Downs Geneseo, 8-5

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team won its third straight game as the Cardinals overcame a four-goal deficit in the second half en route to an 8-5 win over visiting SUNY Geneseo on Thursday afternoon at Growney Stadium.  With the win, Fisher improved to 5-1 on the season while the Knights suffered their first loss and are now 3-1.

After falling behind by two goals at the conclusion of the first half of play, Fisher would trail Geneseo by four goals midway through the third quarter after the Knights notched back-to-back unassisted tallies to open up a 4-0 lead.

The Cardinals' offense began to show signs of life as the third quarter ticked away, however, as Andrew Rosso scored one of his three goals on the day with 6:49 remaining in the period to cut the deficit to three, 4-1.  Just over 90 seconds later, Nick Papayanakos found the back of the net to make it a two-score game.  The momentum continued to swing in Fisher's favor as the quarter wore on when Rosso weaved his way through the Knights' defense and unleashed a shot into the top corner of the goal to pull the Cardinals to within one, 4-3.  With 3:44 still showing on the clock, Dante Giordano netted the game-tying goal as the two teams headed into the fourth frame knotted up at 4-4.

After killing a three-minute penalty to start the final quarter, Fisher found itself on the man advantage after the Knights were whistled for a slashing penalty.  The home team took advantage of the opportunity as Drew Brown connected with Glenn Roschetzky for the goal as Fisher took its first lead of the game, 5-4, with 9:22 left to play.

Geneseo tied the game up two minutes later, but the Cardinals closed out the contest with three straight goals including a pair by TJ VanDeusen to earn the come-from-behind win.

Rosso finished with a game-high four points on three goals and an assist to go along with four ground balls.  VanDeusen scored a pair of goals on three shots.  Tanner Swan moved to 5-1 in net after making seven saves in 60 minutes of action.

As a team, Fisher had just nine turnovers and scooped up 21 ground balls in all.

The Cardinals will look to make it four wins in a row at 2 p.m. on Saturday when they begin Empire 8 play against Hartwick College at Growney Stadium.
