PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team held on to earn an 8-7 victory over Oswego State on Sunday afternoon at Growney Stadium. With the loss, Fisher improves to 4-1 on the season while the Lakers move to 2-3.
After allowing Oswego to score the first goal of the contest, Fisher was able to even it up midway through the opening quarter as
Glenn Roschetzky netted his first of the year. The Lakers would bookend the period with another goal though, leading 2-1 after the first 15 minutes.
The second stanza was a mirror image of the first as Fisher put up two goals to Oswego's one.
Nick Papayanakos notched his ninth of the season to start out the period and
Danny Turck joined the scoresheet midway through the quarter.
Oswego opened up the third with two quick goals, but then it was all Cardinals. Fisher recorded the game's next five goals including a hat trick from
Drew Brown. With an 8-5 lead and regulation nearing an end, Oswego nabbed two to come within one goal. The Lakers found themselves a man up in the final minute but were unable to capitalize as the Cardinals shut down the opportunity.
Fisher performed well on the special teams as the team converted on three of their five man up advantages and prevented Oswego from scoring on all but one of the Lakers five attempts.
Offensively,
Zach Wagner (1G, 2A) and Brown (3G) each finished with three points, while Papayanakos (2G) and Turck (1G, 1A) registered two.
On defense,
Zakary Bussey had a monster day, causing five turnovers and scooping four ground balls.
In goal,
Tanner Swan turned aside 18 Laker shots.
Men's lacrosse will return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday as the team hosts SUNY Geneseo to finish out its three-game stint against SUNYAC opponents.
