UNION, N.J. – Scott Eisenmenger clubbed two home runs and
Anthony Brophy remained unbeaten on the mound as the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College baseball team split on Sunday in Union, N.J. The No. 15 Cardinals fell in extra innings to Misericordia, 3-2, before bouncing back with a 7-1 win over host Kean University at Jim Hynes Stadium. Fisher's record moved to 6-5 with the split.
MISERICORDIA 3, FISHER 2
Fisher fell behind to the Cougars in the top of the second inning after Misericordia plated one run on just one hit to take a 1-0 lead. The Cougars doubled their advantage in the fourth frame with another run before the Cardinals plated a pair in the bottom of the fourth when Eisenmenger drove the first pitch he saw over the centerfield fence, which scored
Antony Mantova who had led off with an infield single.
Neither team was able to work around the bases until the Cougars drilled a pinch-hit solo homer in the top of the 10th to hold a one-run lead, 3-2.
Fisher had the tying run at first base after
Nate Roethel singled to left-center, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat and sealed the win for Misericordia.
Jim Dawson pitched 7.0 innings and surrendered just one run on six hits but did not factor in the decision.
Kyle Chambers (0-2) was tagged with the loss after throwing 3.0 innings of relief with two hits and one run.
FISHER 7, KEAN 1
Brophy (4-0) remained unbeaten as the freshman worked 6.0 innings of one-run ball. Brophy gave up just five hits on the afternoon before being lifted by
Loukas Brigham who tossed a scoreless seventh inning.
Dominick Pisciotto closed out the win for Fisher with 2.0 innings of perfect relief.
After a scoreless first inning, Fisher inflicted all the damage in the top of the second with seven runs on five hits and three Kean errors.
Allen Murphy started the frame with a single to right before moving to third as
Thomas Pasquale dropped down a sacrifice bunt and ultimately ended up at second base on a throwing error by the catcher.
Ryan Fahy stepped to the dish and ripped an RBI-single that scored Murphy and gave Fisher a 1-0 lead. After an out, Fahy stole second and Murphy scored on another throwing error by Kean's backstop to make it 3-0 in the Cardinals' favor. Fahy came around to score when
Evan Ryan blasted a two-run shot over the left field wall to give the visitors a four-run lead, but the offense wasn't done there.
Justin Graham kept the inning going with a double down the leftfield line before Mantova drew a two-out walk. With two outs and two on and the Cardinals already leading by four, Eisenmenger put the game put of reach after belting a three-run shot to make it a 7-0 game.
Kean got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, but that was it as the Cardinals yielded just two hits over the final three innings.
St. John Fisher is scheduled to return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday when it makes its home debut at Dugan Yard against the College at Brockport.
